Why Astronomers Make Great Realtors

I had a great opportunity to go up into one of those cool observatories and star gaze the other night. It was all around impressive, and (as usual) I let my mind wander into weird places, connecting dots that may not actually be there, but it's my world so it makes sense to me. Come along for the ride:

Observatory ImageMy first thought was how VAST the sky is. Not unlike all those homes for sale in our markets. If we take a step back, all of that information can be overwhelming and we just get lost in it. (Wow, this would also make a great introduction to a "social media" blog topic, but we'll save that for later...)

The interesting thing is the roof of the observatory. It has a slit in it so the telescope can focus on only one particular spot in the night sky, blocking out other ambient light which could muddle what we're trying to see. The slit in the roof allows for FOCUS and to not let the bright environment interfere with our mission (feel free to apply this to your real estate career as well as star gazing!)

Also impressive was when the ENTIRE ROOF MOVED so we can see another spot in the sky. It actually was a weird optical illusion and my mind thought the floor was being taken out from under me. Wild. Those stars don't move, so if the clouds are in the way we must refocus on another spot. Not just spend time looking blankly at the clouds, waiting for them to move. Go to where the stars are and soak in their beauty!

As I was walking back to the car I thought how I need to be an EXPERT in a couple of subdivisions. I need to KNOW a zip code. I need to live and breathe one area like no one else. FOCUS. Sure, I am aware of those other galaxies out there around me and there are some great things about them too, but we prosper in the niche. Am I being a Jack of all Trades or an Expert of One (or a couple)?

Because we can always refocus and keep growing that base of knowledge. Happy gazing!
