Speechless Sunday - Mystery Orchid

I came upon this mysterious flower when walking down by our stream one morning.  It's obviously an orchid and it's not native to here.  Somebody must have put it there once upon a time.  We've lived at this same Haiku property for 21 years and it's new to me!

I just love orchids.  A purple orchid is a rarity in the wilderness.

Georgina, maybe it's a hybrid - a couple of plants mergd together after being on the same island for years?  I checked a couple of my gardening/plant books and nothing looks like that.  It kinda looks like a cross between an orchid and a bird of paradise plant.

Wow - they are beautiful and you did a great job capturing it in your photos. These are so different from the orchids I grow, and very unique looking!

Tropical flowers are so beautiful. We don't get them that pretty here in PA.

Georgina,

What a rare and wonderful treat you stumbled upon! It will be interesting to know if it's been recorded. You just might have discovered something new! This is truly a very unusual and beautiful orchid or a plant from the orchid family!

Just think, if you did make a new discovery, wouldn't it be wonderful if they named it after you? A Georgina orchid sounds beautiful!

I'm thinking I may have to bring Ceil to Hawaii for our 50th Wedding Anniversary. It will be coming up soon so I best start saving. I'm afraid she would love it there and never want to come back to Texas.

Thanks for all your comments.

Patricia - It must have been planted because these plants just don't grow wild here naturally.  We recently cleared a path along the stream so it might have been there a number of years and we wouldn't have known it.

Carl - I think that's a great idea to come here on your 50th!  Let me know and I'll throw a party in your honor.

Georgina - whatever it is, it is indeed beautiful! People always release plants and animals that are not natives to the area and don't understand that they can be upseting the eco-balance of the area! We have boa constrictors in the Everglades that are killing native animals. Trappers are constantly catching them!

If it is a new undiscovered plant then it could be named after you! The Georgina Orchid!

Barbara-Jo... yes we in Texas keep hearing about the problems you guys are having with the Boa Constrictors in your area! It really is a scary thing.
