Since the penalty can be upwards of an additional 5% per month of the total balance due it is imperative that you file on time or file for an extension. However, that amount maxes out at 25%
However, even when you file an extension you still need to enough money to cover your liabilities. Sending more than the required amount means that you can apply the difference to next year's taxes, or ask them to send you the balance back.
