There are SO many foreclosures and vacant homes in the valley. With the foreclosures, usually the electricity and water gets shut off too.

Homes with pools will turn into soupy green pools. A stagnant pool will provide the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes .

The Southern Nevada Health District is also concerned about the amount of vacant, unkept homes asks that you report green pools, spas or stagnant water sources to help prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. You can report by calling: SNHD 702-759-7220

Renee - Can I hear an AMEN - we are experiencing the same thing here. Glad to hear Las Vegas is being proactive.

We have green pools, too - and high uncut grass that can house critters. These abandoned homes are becoming a real problem for the neighborhoods.

I don't know if feeder fish would work when the water is already green and stagnant, but in our relatively mild winters in Northern California I have had success in keeping down mosquitos and algaie by putting a couple of dozen "feeder fish" into pools. Those are the sacrificial fish that get fed to carnivorous aquarium fish, so they're pretty cheap. Visit you local aquarium shop and see if they have any recommendations for fish that could survive in an inactive pool over the winter.

What a contrast...that big, pink "Renee Burrows" signature and that stale green pool.

Thanks for your help today.  Keep up the great work.

EEEWWWW.  Nasty!  But something that I had not thought about either.  I'll have to remember to call my local health department if I see something like this.  We've already had a least 2 West Nile deaths here in Georgia this year.

My brother has a house next door in foreclosure,...the pool is disgusting and he has children...I told him to throw a jug of chlorine and some acid in the pool.

YUK!  I saw a pool in my neighborhood that was inhabited by hundreds of frogs!  It must have sounded like a Budweiser commercial at night!

Good point, Renee. Have seen alot of these lovely things in certain areas. California has already had a number of cases of West Nile virus (some fatalities), although not sure if they are attributable to these particular situations. It certainly doesn't help to sell the home, does it?!

I wonder if management companies and those who list REO's should include some sort of treatment in their preparation for market.
