wagon wheel horse ranchAre you looking for things to do in Hemet for your kids? We began home schooling our daughter Josie recently and it seemed the perfect opportunity to nurture her love of animals in general, and especially horses. Through the River Springs Charter School we got connected with Wagon Wheel Ranch...and we're so glad we did!

Wagon Wheel Ranch is located in rural Murrieta off of Scott Road just north of the 215 freeway and is owned and operated by Christa Schaffer.

The ranch offers some awesome opportunities for the family including:

  • Youth camps
  • Birthday parties
  • Boarding for your horses
  • Equestrian clinics
  • Private lessons and group lessons in horsemanship

Josie Love Aszterbaum and Jenny the horseOur daughter is signed up for horsemanship classes. She's learning to care and clean her horse, Jenny, as well as to saddle up and ride! (We don't actually own a horse...Jenny is the horse that the ranch assigned to Josie for her lessons).

It's fun to bring the whole family to Josie's lesson because there are lots of other animals around...several dogs, cats and even goats call Wagon Wheel Ranch home. The Hemet Home Loan Guy sat in the shade of a large tree enjoying the cool Murrieta weather.

Wagon Wheel Ranch is at 26789 Wickerd Rd in Murrieta California, about 30 minutes from West Hemet in southern Riverside County.  Their phone number is (951) 672-8486.

Hi Joey,
Young girls love horses and being responsible for caring for the animal is certainly a good thing.  My niece got a pony and is taking lessons and it has boosted her self esteem and self confidence tremendously.  This ranch sounds great and a wonderful place for a family outing.

Looks like fun!  Good Localism post, Joey.  Keep up the good work!

Joey, Wagon Wheel Ranch looks like a great facility.

I think my daughter's first word was horse.  She was in a precision horseback drill team in Colorado and her love of horses helped with our moves to North Carolina and Texas.  We moved her here in high school and ended up buying her a horse which was her best friend through high school.  I still have all her tack and am hopeful that her love of horses will bring her back to the west someday.  She tells me it is going to.  Learning to care for a horse is a great experience.  Our daughter had to prove herself to us before we bought the horse and she worked for the trainer doing whatever, even if it was mucking out stalls.

Cynthia: I didn't mention in my post that I've always been a little scared of horses. I had a friend say he felt the same way until someone told him, "They don't know they're big." I'm surprised how the little ones are so confident around the horses. Thanks for visiting.

Jason: Thanks. I need to keep the localism posts going. And it's a blast. Even though I live in a small town in California, it's still so easy to be disconnected from nature.

Marchel: Horseback drill team? Does someone need to call PETA? :) Seriously, that must take a lot of skill. So where does she live now?

Joey, I had to come look again, this post was like going down memory lane.  My daughter is now 25 and living in New York City.  She moved there as a graphic artist, hated corporate America (the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree) and got a job as a flight attendant with a charter company doing International flights.  She is LITERALLY seeing the world.  The company she works for has one of the contracts to move our troops and she loves those troop flights, she said they remind her of the boys back home.  Plus with her brother in the Army she has an immediate in.  Like I said I think horses will move her back to the west someday.

Pamela: She kills me. We have a game where I start clutching my chest and croaking "You're too beautiful...it's breaking my heart..." Then she makes her 'ogre face' so that my heart doesn't break. Thank you...and start riding!

Marchel: She moved from Texas to New York City, eh? There's a culture difference. Lucky thing, seeing the world, but it can wear on you, too. I understand the call of the wild...my wife and I are trying to figure out how we can move to a place that's more natural instead of our nice, suburban home. It makes it tough when selling isn't a good option.
