WASHINGTON - First lady Michelle Obama plans today to kick off a national initiative highlighting the special needs of wounded military members and their families.

Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will unveil the initiative at the White House before embarking on a two-day tour of medical facilities and family support centers in Texas, North Carolina, Colorado and Ohio.

In Texas, the first and second ladies will tour Brooke Army Medical Center and a family support center in San Antonio.

"The initiative aims to educate, challenge, and spark action from all sectors of society," according to a White House statement announcing the initiative, "to ensure military families have the support they have earned."

White House officials said the San Antonio stop will include a private meeting between Obama, Biden and wounded military members and their families at BAMC.

The first and second ladies will then tour the Warrior and Family Support Center, located near BAMC and the Center for the Intrepid, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center for wounded military members.

The Warrior and Family Support Center is staffed by volunteers and provides families of wounded warriors a place to receive emotional support and counseling away from the hospital.

"This center is a shining example of how communities can step up for military members and their families," the White House said.

After the San Antonio visit, Obama is scheduled to travel to Denver and participate in a more celebratory event at Coors Field, with a baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the New York Mets. Singer Jessica Simpson is expected to perform, and the U.S. Air Force Academy baseball team will practice with military children attending the game.

Officials said the first lady will officially launch the initiative at noon today in a White House ceremony to thank businesses, philanthropists and government groups for what they have done to support veterans.

Obama and Biden will travel to Camp Lejeune, N.C., to highlight Operation Shower, a nonprofit organization that hosts baby showers for military families experiencing deployments or high-stress situations.

The White House delegation will meet with special guest Martha Stewart and bring gifts for 40 pregnant women whose husbands are service members.

The two-day tour by the first lady will end Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, where Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothersand Elmo from the Sesame Street Muppets will take part in a concert-style event honoring National Guard members and their families.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is scheduled to join the first and second ladies in Columbus.

Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio Texas

Located at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Brooke Army Medical Center is one of the premier health centers for the United States Army. Providing full health care services for soldiers and their families, this 450 bed facility also includes specialty clinics, including the Army Burn Center, post graduate medical education, training and research.

BAMC is the Army's only Level I trauma center and receives over 4,000 medical emergencies a month. BAMC is one of only 15 hospitals in the United States that holds both Level 1 Trauma certification and accreditation from the American Burn Association. Forty beds are devoted to the Army Institute of Surgical Research, which operates the renowned "Army Burn Center" - the only Department of Defense Burn Center.

BAMC and ISR have over 872 officers, 778 non-commissioned officers, 2,114 civilians and 1,718 contractors totaling 5,482 employees in the medical center. The hospital has cared for 4,326 service members including Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen who were injured in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. At the same time BAMC has deployed a total of 1,545 assigned Soldiers in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Since initiation of US military operations in Iraq, the USAISR Burn Flight Team has completed more than 85 overseas flight missions, transporting 350 burn and trauma casualties from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany to BAMC for definitive care.

The Burn Center at BAMC has treated more than 800 military personnel injured in overseas contingency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan since March 2003. In order to meet the increasing patient care requirements related to military burn casualties, a second burn intensive care unit was opened in December 2004.

In January of 2005, BAMC opened the Department of Defense's second center for amputee care. To date, providers at BAMC have cared for over 283 service members who have sustained traumatic amputation.

On January 29, 2007, the multi-million dollar state-of-the-art out-patient rehabilitation center named the "Center for the Intrepid" (CFI) opened its doors. This world-class facility conceived by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and was built by the donations of over 600,000 Americans. The CFI is part of BAMC and its day-to-day operations are funded by the Army. Opened at the same time and adjacent to the CFI are two new 21-room, handicap-accessible Fisher Houses to place Warriors in Transition and their family members.

BAMC's 58-outpatient specialty clinics record a million patient visits each year. The hospital sustains over 60 accredited educational programs that include 38 Graduate Medical Education Programs, eight nursing programs, 18 enlisted allied health and medic phase II training programs along with additional programs in administration and allied health specialties. source: Brooke Army Medical Center

It's great Robert that both women will visit Brooke and highlight this area. Brooke Medical from my understanding does excellent work in its category for the military.
