Closing Gifts...What do you give?

By

You are finally at the closing table...after all of that hard work! You are about to get your nice big fat closing check(Hopefully it is big and fat)What do you get your client(s) to thank them for their business?

I know some agents base their gift on the price of the property...others base it on how much they liked their client.

A nice bottle of wine is a great gift..but what if they don't drink?

Gift cards are always sensible. You can choose whatever denomination you want to give.Maybe it is a fancy restaurant?Maybe it is a home improvement card from the local hardware store?

One gift our company gives our customers is free cable hookup and first months free service from our local cable company for their television or their computer.Everyone uses this gift.

Quite a few agents nowadays take advantage of the Robb&Stuckey Gift certificates as well!

I had heard a local agent here would give a ham at closing because her last name was Hamm.I thought that was a terrific marketing idea!

Are there any other special types of closing gifts you give?

I usually give gift baskets of coffee and candy and sometimes other stuff. I used to give Tiffany key rings with a house attached to it. Booze is always good after a long closing:)

Beautiful gift baskets, personalized with something that you know (because you've learned all about your client through the time you've spent with them!) they love...maybe a special tea, movie gift cards, chocolates...just be sure and personalize!

I vary what I give according to what I've learned about the client over the course of the transaction.  For example, recently I gave a couple of gift certificates to good local plant nurseries and a book on gardening for this area to someone who had relocated from a very different part of the country with very different soil and climate, because we had discussions during the house hunt about what kinds of berries and vegetables would grow well here and there was reminiscing about the landscape of the house he grew up in.

Another time it would be a gift certificate to a restaurant for a client that shares my delight in good food.

Another time, for a first time homeowner, a Homeowners Book as mentioned above, along with a list and schedule of maintenance items for their new home.

I somtimes give Tiffany bowls. They are not as expensive as they look and usually the buyers put it in very prominent place, like the den or dining room. Food items are quickly forgotten.

What about a membership to the Zoo if they have children, or to a museum, or amusement park.  Or, you could do a "gift of the month" club subscription - they have all kinds - wine clubs, flower clubs, bar-b-que sauce clubs, anything you can think of just about.  And then every month, when they get your gift, they'll be thinking about you :)

I like that idea Kelly...we have Disney and Busch gardens nearby!

The product of the month club is nice as well...keeps you on their minds monthly!

it would be interesting with our current cycle of business , how many of you are increasing or decreasing the value of your closings gift?

Are agents trying to cut back expense (like some are unfortuately doing in marketing too) across the board?

Or has reduced volume, increased the value of a client- dedicated agent's acknowledgement after the closing?  with more agents wanting to show that appreciation in a tangible  way...

OF COURSE, those that do are likely still seeing the closing table- so the % doing nicer gifts is likely on the way UP!

Well, as you know, we've done the wine, champagne, Home Depot cards and restaurant gift certificates. I like some of these other ideas.
