BuffaloEvery year, the National Bison Range rounds up all of the buffalo in the park to give innoculations, check health status, and to select buffalo to thin the heard. This year's event is scheduled for October 9-10, 2007.

If you're in the area, this is a must-see event. You get the opportunity to get up close to the buffalo, watch the cowboys & cowgirls herd the buffalo into the shoots, and learn about the conservation efforts at the Bison Range.

The National Bison Range is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. It was established in 1908 and is one of the oldest Wildlife Refuges in the nation.

As its name implies, the Refuge was established to support a population of American bison. It is home to about 350-500 of these animals. Other large wildlife found on the Range include elk, white-tail and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and black bear. Because of its open grasslands, the Bison Range is a place for the public to enjoy some excellent wildlife observation and photography.

To get to the Bison Range, take Hwy 93 North from Missoula to Ravalli. Turn Left at Ravalli on Hwy 200 towards Dixon. Watch for the signs and the right turn to Moiese. Once you reach Moiese, you can't miss the entrance to the Bison Range, just past the store.

Thanks Cheryl. I don't think we're expecting snow at our elevation yet, but we've had snow in the mountains above us and it's been getting chilly. Fall is definitely in Montana - with a little bit of Winter!

Hi Kevin and Monica-WOW...my parents would love that....they are relocating to Alabama but their first love is Montana..  My parents go to Montana every year and watch the buffulo roam.  They love the fact they can look out a window and see them.  We are nature lovers in our family.  Beautiful...just beautiful and thanks for commenting on my post
