The last few days I've been asked that question over and over at the Virginia Association of Realtors® (VAR) Convention. First a little background on what is happening at VAR. An awareness of social media and its impact on real estate is beginning to take hold. The association is working hard to look at policies related to social media and blogging and has hired a Director of Communication and New Media, Ben Martin to help educate and lead their efforts. In between sessions at the conference I am helping in a Social Media Lab to introduce Virginia Realtors to blogging. There are a couple of other AR notables working in the lab as well including:
Frank Llosa
Daniel Odio
Dan Bogdanovic
Tony Arko
So back to the question-Why Do You Blog? I think the answer is a diverse as we are as individuals. My blogging grew out of my desire to try and keep people in my area informed not only about real estate issues but just general information about the area that they may not have known before. I'm don't write fancy in-depth journalistic articles it isn't my style, I'm a fairly casual person in life and it wouldn't fit my personality. I don't follow a theme and heck sometimes I can't even keep a coherent thread going in my own posts. I've given up worrying about proper grammar even though I started college as an English Major (it was because I like to read not write) but I do try and check my spelling.
However, I see plenty of blogs or AR and other places that are incredible pieces of work and I think WOW they should be nationally syndicated. Then I realize that in a way blogging does provide you the opportunity to be syndicated without all of the hassle of getting the print media to try and pick you up.
So for anyone who is looking for the answer Why Do You Blog realize that your reasons for putting fingers to keyboard are going to be different from another Realtor®. Don't try and emulate someone else's style. If you do you will become disenfranchised very quickly and quit. Find your own voice and don't be intimidated but what else you see or read. Have fun with blogging, it will grow on you and then you will be able to answer the question Why Do You Blog?
