I love bird feeders and I love birds. I don't really know all their names and species, but I think they are delightful and above all I love the idea of flying. Oh to be able to fly, but I digress..... Birds love seeds, but we all know who loves seeds too. Those darn squirrels. I love to hate squirrels and I have, as I'm sure you have tried, to beat those clever little rats in anyway possible that I can think of from my bird feeders. I don't want to write about the different things I have tried, because I'm sure you've tried them too. I want to tell you and show you on the 3 photos I have attached how I finally outsmarted them.
What you see is a thin white dry cleaners hanger, pulled straight. A hook made on both ends. It hangs from a telephone wire, an old land line we no longer use anyway. I can unhook the feeders, standing on tippy toes, to refill them. I then lift them back up on the hook. That takes some skill, I'll admit. So they are about 7 ft off the ground. The telephone wire comes all the way from the house and goes to the road. And the darn critters haven't figured out how to walk along the wire to the feeders. Or they haven't clued in that the wire from the road or the house would connect them to the feeders. What ever it is, right now I have beaten them. For about 6 weeks now I have beaten them and that makes me very happy! And the birds are very happy too.
