South Florida is more than just Beaches and Sunshine

1As a South Florida Native, I know how fortunate I am to live and enjoy life here in the Sunshine State.  Of course People come from around the World to enjoy our Beaches and Sub Tropical Weather.  Many People are attracted to our World Famous Fishing because of the close proximity to the Gulfstream not to mention the beautiful Marine Life that is enjoyed by Scuba Divers and Snorkelers alike.

But did you know that South Florida is also home to a Variety of Professional Sports Team.  If you love Sports this is the place for you.  Whether you live here year round or come for a vacation or visit you are likely to enjoy a Sporting Event just about any time of the year.  Below is a list of Teams that call South Florida Home.

11The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football team based in the Miami metropolitan area in Florida. The team is part of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Dolphins play home games at Sun Life Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, and have their headquarters at the Miami Dolphins Training Facility in Davie, Florida.

The Dolphins team was founded by Joe Robbie, and began play in the American Football League (AFL) as an expansion team in 1966 - an example of the AFL's expanding into parts of the United States that had not possessed professional football teams (with the exception of the Miami Seahawks, who played in the AAFC in 1946 before becoming the first incarnation of the Baltimore Colts). In 1970, the Dolphins joined the NFL when the AFL-NFL merger occurred. The Dolphins are the oldest continually-operating major-league professional sports franchise in the state of Florida.

11The Florida Marlins are a professional baseball team based in Miami, Florida. Established in 1993 as an expansion franchise, the Marlins are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. The Marlins are notable for winning the World Series twice (1997, 2003), in the only two times they have made it to the postseason. They have never won first place in their division, advancing to the playoffs both times as the National League Wild Card winner. They are the only current professional sports team to have won a championship every time (twice, in this case) they qualified for postseason play.

11The Miami Heat is a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida, United States. The team is a member of the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). They play their home games at American Airlines Arena. The team is owned by and Micky Arison, coached by Erik Spoelstra and is managed by Basketball Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley.

The Heat was formed in 1988 as an expansion franchise along with the Charlotte Hornets. Since then, Miami has fielded squads that have made the playoffs 13 out of the 21 seasons, captured seven division titles and won the 2006 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks 4-2. According to Forbes Magazine in 2010 the value of the franchise is $425 million.

11The Florida Panthers are a professional ice hockey team based in Sunrise, Florida, in the Miami metropolitan area. They are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Panthers took part in the 1993 NHL draft hosted by Quebec City; that draft produced ten players who would be a part of the 1996 Eastern Conference championship team.

11The Miami Hurricanes Football program competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision for the University of Miami. The program began in 1926 and has won 5 AP national championships (1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 2001). Miami is ranked fourth on the list of All-time Associated Press National Poll Championships, behind Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Alabama.

Two Hurricanes have won the Heisman Trophy and six have been inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame. Miami also holds a number of NFL Draft records, including most first round selections in a single draft and most consecutive drafts.
