What is Rotary?Rotary International

Before joining Rotary in April of this year, I really didn't know what Rotary was all about.  Since then I have met other people who really don't know what Rotary is about either.  I'm here today to share what I know about Rotary!

I am a Rotarian and I'm proud to be part of such an amazing SERVICE organization powered by other volunteers who know the importance of caring for each other.

Rotary International is a worldwide group of volunteers providing good works and community service.  It began in Chicago, Illinois in 1905 with only 4 members.  It has grown to 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs worldwide in more than 200 countries!

Locally, the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club of Parker supports several projects including the Douglas County Women's Crisis Center, Project Sanctuary, Douglas County Support Center, Legend High School Student of the Quarter and Trick or Treat on Mainstreet.

Internationally, the Club supports:

  • Project Cure - Nigeria
  • Shelter Box - Philippines and Haiti
  • Shallow Water Wells - Tanzania
  • Micro Credit Program - Zambia
  • Polio Plus - Worldwide
  • Exchange Student Program - Worldwide

Each year the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club hosts fundraisers to raise monies to financially support local and international projects.  Upcoming fundraisers include:

  • Annual Peach Sales are under way.  Purchase a large box (18lbs) for $30 each or a small box (10lbs) for $23 each.  Orders MUST be place byThursday, August 18, 2011.  More details to follow in a future blog post!

  • The Smokin' Brew BBQ is aKansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned competition and Rocky Mountain Barbecue Association Cup event held during Labor Day weekend.  Watch for more information about this upcoming event.

To really get a feeling for what Rotary is all about and what we can accomplish by working together, please take a few minutes and watch the video below.  You'll be glad you did.

Hi Donna, I knew about the Rotary Clubs, but I was not familiar with all those Charitable organizations that they supported. This would be a nice Pay it Forward too.

Hi Jerry~ I had no idea what they did before I joined.  I'm so glad I went to that first meeting!

Donna:

I am not a Rotarian, but I married to one.  My husband has been in Rotary for 20+ years.  People whom I talk with who denigrate Rotary as being for rich businessmen turn around and tell me that RI does a wonderful job helping to eliminate polio.  I tell them that is not all Rotary does.  The local Rotary contributes to a lot of Alameda charities without much fanfare.  Rotary is a great organization.

Hi Evelyn~ Wow, 20+ years!  That's terrific.  I learn something new about Rotary all the time.  I'm so glad we made it a part of our lives!

I've got to slow down and take another look at joining a community oriented service organization.

Michael~ I would encourage you to look in to your local Rotary club.  Every club has different projects, however there should be a good mix of local, national and international projects.  Best of luck!

I've seen the benefits of rotary first hand. My brother was lucky enough to live and go to school in the Philippines thanks to the Rotary Club. I say they do great things for community.

Hi Joni~ After being absent for 7 months, I made it to our weekly Rotary meeting yesterday.  It felt good!  It'll be a while before I can actively participate in any of our volunteer opportunities, but when I'm ready, you bet I'll be out there!

I am so glad to hear that you are taking it slow and getting back in to the routine of things at a nice pace. It's the best way to do it!!
