Fairfax County, VA groups its public schools into pyramidsThe Mayans, just like the Egyptians, were ancient civilizations who built impressive structures made of rock called "Pyramids".

Unfortunately, we don't get to enjoy those amazing feats of architecture here, in Fairfax, Virginia.  But we do have school pyramids.

What Are School Pyramids?

Most school districts work like a pyramid. At the top is a high school, and underneath it, feeding into that high school, are one or more middle schools and several elementary schools.

In the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system of Northern Virginia, these groupings of schools are actually referred to as "School Pyramids".

For example:

In Fairfax, VA, the Fairfax High School pyramid has 5 elementary schools and 1 middle school all feeding into Fairfax High School.

Why should this matter to you as a home buyer?

Because the high school your children attend can have a huge impact on where they go to college, and how prepared they are for their college years.

Even if your children aren't ready for high school yet, you'll want to be thinking ahead. Which high school has the best preparation for college, the best college counseling office, the best record of placing students at top ranked colleges?

Start with the right elementary school

Once you know this, you can look for a school in the base of the pyramid to find the elementary school that's the best match for your children. Over the years they'll progress up the pyramid to the top.

Unless you plan to move before your children are in high school, you'll want to consider their entire "pyramid" experience when you pick a neighborhood to live in.

But selecting the right Fairfax County Public School pyramid isn't enough

Once you find the right Fairfax school, you need to make sure to live within the school boundary of your choice since the school boundaries in Fairfax County are very strict.

Summary:

School pyramids are a grouping of schools with the high school at the top, several elementary feeder schools at the base of the pyramid, and middle schools…well… in the middle.

Choosing the right school pyramid should be a priority for parents since it will directly affect their children’s preparation for college.

Selecting a pyramid is the first step. The next (and very important) step is to make sure to live within the selected school boundary.

Well I never! I really thought the pyramids were for Egyptians and MLM.

It must be very difficult for a mom from out of town to work all that out, before buying a home.

Am I to be lead to believe you have a map to help parents find the inner room to the best school in the best pyramid for their children?

I hope so, otherwise there will be a lot of stress going down in Fairfax every time an ambitous family move into town.
