This post is about picking (or changing) the name of the company. So many of us face it at least once, when we go independent and are forming the company. How do you pick the best name for your company. What elements are a must? How specific it should be? I am about doing just that and I am lost.

We are revamping some of our internet marketing. As part of it, we are shifting to a new domain: MyDaytonaCondo.com. This will be our main, with pages for those condos that we will be covering. Here's the sample of one page  www.daytonacondos-marinagrande.com. It is still missing some of the stuff, including photos, but we are getting there with the help of Inna & Jon (thanks, guys).

When we registered as FunCoast Realty years ago, we did it because our new area code (386) was chosen for FUN, so there was some symbolism, but besides few locals, nobody remembers it, and what good is the name, when you have to explain what it means?

Our core business are condos and condo-hotels, which are still condos. So, we started thinking about changing the name of the company before we start really working the Internet. And making it clearly a condo name looked enticing.

After mulling through a bunch of names with condo and Daytona, I thought that having the same name as the domain could be a great idea. My Daytona Condo, LLC..

Happy that we found such a great name, I called Inna. Well, she did not share my enthusiasm, to put it mildly. She thinks that MyDaytonaCondo.com is good as domain, but a company named My Daytona Condo, LLC is terrible. I do not see it this way.

She does not like «My» there. I guess Daytona Condos, LLC sounds better to Inna. Yes, it is more neutral, but to me it is a castrated version of a more personal «My Daytona Condo, LLC». «My» to me makes a personal connection, and that's why I like it.

The concern that people would be confused with what we do does not bother me that much. We will have a second line: Sales and Rentals or something to that affect. And I am absolutely not afraid of losing some potential customers who would not be able to figure it out, I would be happy to lose them, actually.

I do not believe that I can really be losing customers because of the name even if I call the company «White Goose in Blue Waters», as this is not how people find businesses.

Take ActiveRain for example. The name does not have a clear indication of what it does, and still people are able to figure it out. Would «Social network for real estate professionals» be more descriptive? Sure. But how freaking boring that sounds. I love Active Rain... and I love My Daytona Condo.

So, after calling Inna 3 times about it, and getting her upset 3 times, she suggested that we seek your input. And who else can I really turn to in this situation? Whose opinion is more valuable?

What say you?

P.S. Leaving our "old" name is not the best option. We always get confused either with Sun Coast, or Palm Coast.

Jon - When we chose our name (The Nines Team) we were looking for something that was memorable, not necessarily immediately identified with our profession!  BUT .. we did it as an integrated marketing plan.  Folks that are new to you will remember you because you are something that energizes or sparks with them.  Old folks, will remember you because of how you related to them ...

Jon:  MyDaytonaCondo sounds too much like a Jimmy Buffett song to me.  I'd drop the "my" as others have suggested.  I do agree that finding the right name is a headache...that can last for years!

If condos are your niche than I certainly like Dayton Condo Realty.  But that's just me.  Personally, I like FunCoast Realty.  I love the feet on your card in the sand.  It just seems to work.  How about FunCoast Realty - Condos in the Sun are FUN!!  Seriously, I like FunCoast Realty.  I wouldn't change a thing. :) Gail

If you're set on using "Daytona Condo" in both your company name and domain name, you have tons of options - check your AR E-mail

Hi Jon.  Me - get between you and Inna ?  No way.

I vote for White Goose on Blue Waters.

You can have a company name of Daytona Beacn Condo, LLC and have a dba (doing business as) of MyDaytonaBeachCondo.com.

And you can have more than one domain name pointing to the same website.

Jon, you have a great understanding of your product, market niche and customer - but Jon and Inna have the artist's and the master's touch of making it all work on the internet and graphic advertising media.  You all make a great team.

White goose on blue waters.

Satar - I will check about the S Corp, you are right, I need to talk to tax man first. I did not think about protecting the domain, and matching with the company name for that purpose, so I willave to think about it as well. Thank you very much.

Jenny - we deal with other types of properties but it is when we are approached by out previous clients, and for these situations the name would not matter.

thanks for stopping by.

Kristen - I hear you. I am simply worried that when you drop my and leave available Daytona Condos Realty, it is cold and unnappealing. Still thinking.

Thanks

Ted - comments make me think that I might think about getting a few more domains to  better control (dominate) this niche.

Also, DBA thing opens some doors.

So, it is White Goose in Blue Waters, yes? (LOL)

Gabe - Papa Jon's Pizza & Condos? Wow, what a winning concept. ANd then I can turn around and sue them for using a similar name, get them settle for a couple of millions, retire.... Nice

I like number 26 the best. It personalizes it and is not so cold as you suggested for the version without the "my."
