Is Your Web host Piggybacking on Your Site?

Lenn had a great post about domain names today and in it she mentioned that some website hosting and design companies create back links at the bottom of your website linking back to their company site. While this is type of practice is the norm some go a little above and beyond reasonable practices. As I found yesterday one site even converted their clients pages back to their own personal domain although all the pages appeared as if they were his own.

Unfortunately SEO companies and online marketers prey on people's lack of education and ignorance. Butweb host domains, piggybacking on websites couldn't we all do that to some degree? It's like going to get your oil changed and the repairman saying you have x, x and x wrong too.... Do I know any better? Perhaps not but your judgment still needs to take over to some degree. We can't know everything about everything and must rely on experts to a point.

But when someone is talking so far over our head about online garble and SEO tactics how can we all know what will actually help or harm our sites? I think at this point it must come down to results. What actually works and what doesn't. This company said that their client gets most of the Google Juice while they get just a little. Um, excuse me? Shouldn't he be getting ALL the Google Juice? Having a small link at the bottom of the website in the footer is fine especially if visitors want more information on a well done site or hosting. But that should be about it. Anymore "free" advertising for the website company is going a little beyond appropriate.

Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when designing or creating a website:

  • Use inbound links whenever possible. Don't link stuff but if you talk about buyers on the sellers page, link to the buyers page. Community pages throughout the site to the appropriate pages. Search phrases to the search page and so on. This creates a web effect on your site and keeps the search engines crawling around on your site as well as giving visitors places to go. Source
  • Consider opening external links in a new tab or window. I say "consider" because some people don't like to be forced into a new window and on the other hand they may want to go back to the original site.  But generally speaking you don't want visitors leaving your site so anytime you link off of your site, have that link open in a new window so your site stays open. Inbound links can open in the same window if you want.
  • Make sure every page and every link is your domain. Some IDX providers frame in searches, some convert to the search page and this may be unavoidable with your host. Other than this, every page should be your domain and a sub-page there of. Even your website provider's link at the bottom should open in a new window if possible.

Good info Tammy, especially since my current site is framed into my hosts site which is problematic for the reasons you mentioned above and many other reasons.

One being I am currently building a new website and once it's live, I will literally have to go back and revise many links because when I linked key words within my blogs to pages on my website, the page url had the hosts name combined in the linked url.  Ugh.  I need a VA for that task alone!

Now I have to back and study my site. Fortunately I know html so reading the page source might make it easier. Well maybe.

Great advice, Tammy  For some of my outbound links (to complementary partners) I took out the links and just provided the web address instead to reduce outbound links.

Andi, the nice thing about starting with a fresh site that is all your own is you can set it up right from the beginning and that is sometimes really fun! :)

Maya, Great! Just check the links and urls on your site and make sure it's all you! :)

Debbie, thats actually a great idea. But Google does see if you are linking out and considers that good to some extent. It means that your site well rounded and servicable for many things, not just what you provide. That can actually be beneficial. :)

Deepak, HA! Your ok Deepak. Your site is set up correctly.. This one I was with yesterday was completely not. You're good.. just KEEP BLOGGING! Don't give up!!! :)

It's really nice having you around because you always provide such great content and ideas.  I've always felt that any link had to open into a window so they are still in my site when they close that window.  You took this a few steps further and I will go in and try to fix some of these flaws.  Thanks for the helpful info.

I wonder since we are paying for the site if we can charge them to advertise on our site or ask them to remove the link.

Heck ya! Todd!!  It makes perfect sense to me. I'll let you design my site and display your wares but you must pay me... or maybe a "let's call it even" kind of deal.. ha!
