ALAMEDA WALKS

 

ALAMEDA WALKS  The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department sponsors ALAMEDA WALKS  a program started in 2003.  The program was initially a collaboration of the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, Pedestrian Friendly Alameda and Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth & Families.  According to Patrick Russi, Recreation Supervisor, Alameda Recreation & Parks,  the goal was to get people out of their homes on Saturday mornings for a little exercise and a chance learn a little about the city of Alameda. 

The first walk of 2011 will be held on May 7 at 9:00 a.m.starting at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School on Encinal and Chestnut Streets.

ALAMEDA WALKS are held 3 weeks each month from May to October.  The walks are usually an hour long and are easy unless otherwise noted.  Some are architectural walks and other feature interesting sites in Alameda.  Its a great way to learn about Alameda's neighborhoods and to enjoy a pleasant walk.  The walks average 25 people, but some walk featuring guest speakers have had 75 walkers.

ALAMEDA WALKS walks for 2011 have been scheduled.  The first tour of year on May 7 will feature St. Jospeh Notre Dame High School and the Lagoons.  A tour of the SJND campus will be part of the walk. On May 14the group walk will be an Alameda Architectural tour lead by Dennis Evanosky and Eric Kos of the Alameda Sun.   The walk will starting at Jackson Park and will celebrating the Cohen Family and their influence on Alameda Architecture and culture.  The last May walk on May 21 will feature the Bay Trail, Tidewater Aquatic Center and the East End starting at Lincoln Park.

What a great community event, Evelyn.  We just had the Langley Walk in our town, but it's more of an annual event - I love the intention and purpose behind Alameda walks.

Lloyd:  I am involved in so many community events, that I feel it is my duty to let people know about them.  I am also into the history and architecture of Alameda.  Thanks for you nice comment.

 

Karen:  Thanks.  We have some annual walks(10k, etc)  This is a leisurely 1-2 hour walk mainly to see some of the interesting site of Alameda.  Thanks for your comments.
