Often as a Stager I hear this question. Sellers so often have to touch up walls when they are preparing their home for sale. They may need to touch up a damaged area or where they have taken down a family photo. During the Staging consult I have advised the seller to move furniture which usually means moving art.
If they have the paint left over, they can surgically fix the area and it will disappear. However that is not true if they have to go out and get new paint. It's never quite the same shade and shows just as much as the damage.
So save a small amount of the paint if you can while painting. If there is no paint left over, make note of the paint brand, name and number. It will make your life easier when you go to sell and also help if something happens to the finish while living in the house.
Create a decorating scrap book. Notate paint colors or paste in the store paint chip. Add a sample of the flooring or drapery or wallpaper. It will help you as you shop for accessories and in the future when repairs are necessary.
Help out the buyer by leaving them the extra paint or a list of the rooms and the paint colors. I had a client recently who needed to lighten up an area but had no idea what paint had been used by the previous owner. If they had left him a list he could have bought the color in a lighter shade and matched the room perfectly.
If you do have to go out and buy more of the same paint, remember it will be slightly different. This means no surgical repairs. You will need to paint a large section of the room to make it blend.
Save yourself a headache down the road and make yourself a decorating scrap book.
