I’m Not Judging You. (Home Staging in Houston, TX)
I do not live in a Staged Home. Shocking, isn’t it? Oh, I’ve heard tell of people that live in homes with rooms that are clearly defined and uncluttered, but I am not one of those people. Three years ago when my Yetti and I married, we both owned our own homes and had years of stuff in our possession. Although we are responsible for filling at least 2/3 of the shelves at the Goodwill and the guys that pick up the neighborhood trash dreaded our house, we finally settled on a comfortably cluttered lifestyle.
Often, when I visit a seller’s house, I can feel the sense of dread when I walk in the door. As the seller begins to show me around, they will anxiously explain tiny imperfections and cluttered corners. While I do my best to ease their minds at some point during the tour, I will enter the Staging Zone and I am no longer aware of anything but marketing the house. When I am in the Staging Zone, I am looking for positive features of the house that can be enhanced through Staging, and the negative things I will downplay. I am making notes on suggestions I want to give the seller to make the home attractive to buyers that visit. Frankly I do not have time to judge the way you live in your home.
Rather than judge my clients, I admire their desire to make changes to sell their house. Selling a house and moving are stressful and Home Staging can be traumatic. Your home is your comfort zone and it is full of memories. No matter what you have on your walls or the clutter you keep next to the bed it is your home and it should be how you want it to be.
My job is not to judge your décor style, or lack of style, I’m there to help you market a product. Yes, I may chuckle at the eccentric lamp you have in the living room or drop my jaw when I see your collection of glass chickens, but that doesn’t mean my thoughts are negative. I will tell you I want to move these treasures out of sight because they will distract buyers, not because they are ugly or stupid.
So relax. My job is help you and your Real Estate Agent market your house. Your job is to listen to your agent and me as we advise you, and give careful thought to what we say. We all want the same thing, to sell your house.
