Hey, this is 2007! We are ALL supposed to know about the environmental effects of using things like weed killers! So imagine my shock and dismay when I overheard a colleague talking about getting a group of friends together to clean up the front of a listed home and clean it by using WEED KILLER!!!

If they had said they wanted to pull the weeds, I would have jumped onto the band wagon! But WEED KILLER??? No way! I had to jump into the conversation and ask if they had considered the environmental consequences of using weed killer? Did they realize that it ends up in the aquifer? Do they know that it is a ROOT KILLER and does not differentiate between different kinds of roots? Have they never seen 'weeds' with beautiful blossoms???

Needless to say, I was not the most popular person in the group - called the 'party pooper' - Well, given the options, it is a title I willingly accept!

Before you use chemicals think of the long term consequences on our environment!

How funny! I'll bet you got the looks! Good for you for sticking to what you believe and voicing your opinion! It's amazing the chemicals from all sources that show up in our water supplies.

B&BJ, I quit using weed killers years ago when a guy I knew, who was a crop duster, crashed his plane loaded with liquid atrazine.  The only thing he is able to do now is drool.  All of that stuff is NASTY.   And we continue to poison the planet all in the name of a weed free lawn!

I have to agree, I have never sprayed weed killer anywhere.

It's funny how you can go to Long's and buy a gallon of Roundup and spray it all over your yard, but then they don't want you to throw it out in the landfill.... all of a sudden it's toxic waste.

They call it POISON for a reason.

Oh, so funny, I would have liked to be a fly on the wall durring that conversation.  Good for you!  In Maui, the sea turtles that live on the reefs near all the development and golf courses now have lots of growths on them.  It's horrible, all on their neck and face.

The sad thing is, some people continue to use such things when they know the consequences. They really don't care.

Terry - OMG! People don't realize how dangerous this stuff really is!!

Georgina- The sooner this stuff goes the same way DDT went, the better off the planet will be!!!

Karen - I have also seen those growths on sea turtles at the Clearwater Marine Science Center in the rescue tanks!!!

Danielle - It is something I just don't get - HOW CAN YOU NOT CARE?????

B&BJ, did you know that we still manufacture DDT and export it to poor countries like those in Africa?  Its not against the law to  make and export that stuff, apparently their environment is not as important as ours.

If there is such a big job to do they should just pull the weeds like the rest of us. weed killers are not meant to be used in large doses in vast areas and they have bad consequences. I would hate to be these peoples neighbors! Sounds as if these weed killers are going "over-kill"!

Terry - Yes, I did know that! It is amazing how we are willing to pass this trash on to third world nations!

Shellee - I could not agree more! Good old pulling out with the root system is all that is needed!

Yes indeed, especially when they will be right back if you don't get the root structure!
