Things to do in Fair Oaks... Walk the American River Bike Trail Year Round

When it comes to things to do in Fair Oaks, I hate to be ninner-nannery about where I live, but you gotta admit, being able to take a river walk like this in April is pretty stupendous. In Fair Oaks, CA, you can do it!  In fact, the river is a great hike year round.

While much of the country is freezing now, Fair Oaks is basking in the warmth of a Spring sun.  Walkers and joggers are out in full force enjoying our glorious American River Bike Trail, which meanders along the American River from Folsom to downtown Sacramento for a few dozen miles.Foot Bridge at the American River, Fair Oaks, by Sally Dunbar, Fair Oaks Realtor

On today's walk, I watched as a river otter surfaced, then dove into the cold churning water below the bike bridge, searching for tasty morsels.  He cracked me up as his little face popped out of the water with sharp teeth grinding away.  Mmmm...

A little further down the trail, we watched as two teens dipped their jacket into a shallow pool in the trail.  What the heck ya doin??? The laundry...?

"Na... we're trying to save the baby Chinooks... Salmon.  They're trapped in this pool and will die if we don't save them. You can tell them by their little spots."

Oh really?  They're so small I can barely see them, but it's good to know we will have a few more next season because of this guy. And his jacket/net. What a guy!  And people think teens are only about themselves!

Continuing along, we see a line of horses on a trail ride, moseying along the equestrian trail. Yeah, they leave a little lot of poop, but aren't they cool?

As we return back over the bike bridge, we see this guy with his little son, engaged in the ancient right of passage called Learning How to Fish.  His little pole was about 22" long, but Hey... it was in the water.  Dad held onto his belt buckle to keep him from falling.  It was the cutest thing ever.

I'm not sure if the kid was hoping he WOULD or WOULD NOT catch a fish.  Not sure his little pole could even hold one of those  Chinook minnows!  But he sure had fun trying.

It was a glorious day.  I "heart" Fair Oaks!

There is somehow something really wonderful about being around a river....it must speak to the the distant history of the species.
