Douglas County Schools Moves Off Of Year Round Tracks

The Douglas County School District's calendars have evolved over years.

In years past, I have explained the Year Round Track system numerous times. In a nutshell, in was a scheduling way to service more students in less space.  3/4 of the students would be on track while 1/4 would not and all would share space.  The track system was just for elementary schools. When A track would track off, D would track back on and take over their classrooms.

Some people loved tracks, others did not.

But of recent years, more and more schools have moved off of the year round track schedule and this school year the last of the remaining track schools in the Doulgas County School system will end the track system.

The remaining 2 calendars in the Douglas County School District are Modified and Conventional.  Conventional is the most like a traditional schools calendar.  Modified is very similar but the summer is generally about 2 weeks shorter than traditional (usually a week on each side) and then the spring and fall breaks are 2 weeks long instead of one.

I hear mixed opinions still, some love the end of tracks, some don't.  Many of the schools in northern Douglas County such as as Highlands Ranch will be on the Modified calendar, there aren't as many on Conventional, yet anyway.  If there is one thing we know about the schools in Douglas County, things can change.

Here are some further resources for a better understanding of Douglas County Schools, their boundaries and schedules.

Hi Steve,

I agree we have never liked the track system either. If its all your used to then its all you know but when you have only been immersed in the traditional system it was a bit of a shocker. It literally seemed like the kids were always on some sort ofbreak but at the same time they never really had enough time off for us to do the things we wanted as, obviously, all adults have schedules and lives and commitments to keep as well. We are much happier about the traditional system.

I actually personally didn't mind it, it was nice to vacation  when spots were uncrowded.  It was difficult to coordinate with family out of state. But you either liked it or you did not.

I liked when my kids were on track.  Like you said - it's nice to vacation "off season".  Living in a tourist trap of a town I hate the jacked up rates and crowds myself!

As the first school year has started with no one at all in Highlands Ranch on a track, I have heard some of the same folks that never liked it wish they still had it.
