El Cerrito Home

Farms in The Berkeley Area??

Driving down Sacramento Street, right across from the North Berkeley BART station, I was startled by the sight of a chicken coop in someone's front yard. My dog and I were surprised by a large hen clucking accusingly at us from the safety of her coop next to a local trail in Kensington.  I have a friend who lives on the Arlington who has a son fascinated  with hydroponic farming and a daughter who raises chickens and ducks.  Oh, the eggs she gives away!  And this functioning farm is behind one of the most elegant homes on the boulevard.

In an article by Dale F. Mead in the West County Times, El Cerrito is climbing on board the urban farm bandwagon with new regulations concerning raising farm animals in the city. This is an exciting concept.  Along with walk score homes, urban farms go a long way to minimizing our carbon footprints.  Not only that, they provide us with healthy home-grown foods and, through sharing our garden's bounty,  we forge friendships with our neighbors and networks of caring neighborhood communities.

That's why I was very excited when I saw this great home for sale in El Cerrito.  It seems like a perfect fit for all of the above.  There's room to grow a kitchen garden, and when you can't provide for all your veggie needs, there's  easy access to the local farmers market.  That's right, this home has a walk score of 92!
