Okra Strut Closer to a New Home - The Irmo Okra Strut may finally have a new home - at least for this year. Town leaders want to move the popular festival to the eastern end of Saluda Shoals Park near the intersection of St. Andrews and Bush River roads. The move, approved last week, ends plans to spend $230,000 for a 14.5 acre tract of land near Friarsgae for a festival site. While the new plan has the support of town and festival organizers, it still faces a few hurdles. The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission, which ownds the property, will have to agree to the move. The commission is expected to rule on the plan when it meets April 27. The current proposal is for the 2011 festival only. But town leaders hope to convince the commission to make the park the festival's permanent home. The site will need some grading and maintenance for the two-day festival. The plan calls for the commission to do the initial grading work. The town will then maintain the area and add electrical poles and other staging areas necessary to hold the festival. Approval of the plan could end a two-year search for a home for the 39 year old festival.

Lexington Receives Distiguished Award - The Town of Lexington received the 2011 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada during the April Council Meeting. This is the second straight year the Town has received this honor. This prestigious award was only received by a handful of jurisdictions in the state (less than 20) encompassing Counties, Municipalities, School Districts and Water/Sewer Districts. The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA's best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving the goal.

Firefighters Collecting for Burn Center in Boot Drive - On Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 firefighters from area Fire Departments and members of Lexington County EMS will participate in the tenth annual Jeff Chavis Boot Drive to collect funds to support the operations of the Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House at the Joseph M. Still Burn Unit in Augusta, Georgia. Emergency Service personnel will collect funds in firefighters boots between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on April 22 and between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on April 23 at Lexington and Richland County Walmart Stores. They will also collect between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on April 23 at major intersections.
