Azalea Charities Azalea Classic 2011
The Azalea Charities Azalea Classic will be held at the Piedmont Country Club in Haymarket, Virginia May 1, 2, and 3rd. Founded by Prince William County resident Frank Lasch in 1999, Azalea Charities' focus is on providing financial support for Aid for Wounded Warriors, and supporting local youth and special needs project in the Northern Virginia area. The organization is made up of 100% volunteers and 100% of the donations go to the charities they support.
Aid for Wounded Warriors provides support for soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who are sick, injured or wounded from their service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The project gives financial support to the Military Medical Centers, VA Medical Centers and the Fisher House, which houses families of hospitalized warriors so they can be close to their loved one while getting treatment.
As their long-term commitment states: "We hope the war against terror will be over soon and all our brave sons and daughters, wives and husbands can return home safely. Until that time, and perhaps even long after, there will still be seriously ill servicemen and women undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at Walter Reed, Bethesda and elsewhere. We will not abandon them. We will not forget them. They are our heroes and we will stand with them in their suffering, pray for them in our private moments and provide for them to the utmost of our ability."
Day 1 kicks off the three day tournament with the Special Olympics/Boys and Girls Club Golf Day, with over 80 athletes participating. The pros, sponsors and local high school athletes help the young golfers with a golf clinic and tournament at Piedmont Club. The goal of this year's event is to provide financial support to send local Olympians to the 2011 World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.
Day 2 is the Pro-Am Invitational, one of the premier events of the MAPGA season. Sponsors for the day's event get to play with top professional golfers and compete for prizes awarded at the evening's dinner and awards presentation. The professionals compete in a stroke play event and a prize purse of approximately $10,000.
Day 3 is "first" for the Azalea Charities Golf Tournament, and will showcase the LPGA Pro-Am Invitational. Hall-of-Famer Juli Inkster is the Honorary Chairperson for a line-up that so far includes Paige Mackenzie, Blair O'Neal and Pat Hurst. The goal for the LPGA event is to raise $200,000, and will provide an exciting climax to the three-day golf tournament.
