Message: DO NOT attempt to pet the dogs = DO NOT SHOW THE PROPERTY!

This is just too funny but too true all at the same time.  Pets add an entire dimension to home sales and the instructions for how to deal with pets run the gamut in the MLS agents notes.  But I have to agree whole heartedly with Wanda's interpretation.

Message: DO NOT attempt to pet the dogs = DO NOT SHOW THE PROPERTY!

In the private remarks on the MLS, the listing agent thoughtfully warned all buyer agents regarding LARGE DOGS inside the home with a side note that said DO NOT attempt to pet the dogs. To me it translates to say:

  • DO NOT SHOW THIS HOUSE!
  • ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!
  • DANGER! DANGER!

Besides, the hair on the back of the neck would stand at attention when shuffling from room to room at a good clip while looking behind with every step in anticipation. Or that flimsy wire cage that Brutus and Maneater are in may suddenly disengage, leaving nothing but air between us! I THINK WE MAY SKIP THIS PROPERTY, if that is okay with you Mr. & Mrs. Buyer!

Yikes!

DO NOT attempt to pet the dogs = DO NOT SHOW THE PROPERTY!

All humor aside, I must say that I will not put my client's safety at risk because someone refuses to cooperate and take the dogs for a walk or make sure their pets are extremely secure. Also, cats should not have free reign either as they may sneak through the door to escape or will become defensive and defend their territory.

Sellers, please be aware of the showing instructions of your home to buyers agents; it may be an unsafe situation to all involved or the death of your listing! Think about it!

That would be like saying, "Snakes can be in or out of their cages." Sellers need to bone up to the fact that selling their house is an inconvenience and the easier they make it for buyers, the sooner the ordeal will be over.

Hi Charita, this should be a warning to all agents NOT to show that home. My client's safety always come first. I have heard some horror stories from other agents in my office, whose clients have been bitten by dogs in the homes while viewing them. No owner can guarantee what their pets will do with any strangers.

Gerry it can probably be more accurately described as a welcome repellent.

It was well worth it Wanda.

Exactly Jerry AND pet owners sometimes assume that just because they love animals, then everyone else must too.

In a heartbeat Vickie.

So true but I see this all the time.  Just not sure why a Seller would leave large, biting dogs in a house that strangers will be coming in to????

Charita; Whenever I call to make an appointment and they say that a dog is within.. I always counter with "Don't worry  - I will let my client enter before me.." we always smile... but then hellooooooo?  I have never had an issue.. but once I entered a house, and there was a baby's gate propped against a doorway... wasn't locked just propped,,and a pit bull was on the other side.. very docile, loving and sweet.. but the visual did nothing to disarm the nerves!

Charita, I was showing a house recently with a big dog in the house, the renter of the property knew we were going to show the house, but did not put the dog in the yard before we got there.  The buyer refused to go in, but they still wanted to see the house.  I called the listing agent and she came to take the dog out to the backyard.

Listing agent needs to educate the owner/renter whoever lives in the house.  No matter how friendly the pets may seem, sometimes they behave very differently in front of strangers.  Pet owners should at least consider the safety of their own pets, too.
