Before I got into real estate I was an instructor. I taught English and basic German to adults in Europe for many years before returning to the States with my little ones. Once back in Florida I taught in both high school and middle school (history and government) as well as adult education (English as a second language). Perhaps it is for that reason that I always put so much emphasis on continuing education.

Any professional is expected to keep up with changes in their field through continuing education and licensing. Imagine a doctor that went through med school and then just opened his doors and treated patients, never again getting additional training or staying abreast of the latest developments in the medical profession. Not someone I would want treating my granddaughter!

We, as Realtors, are not any different! That is why our State Board of Realtors, local boards and NAR offer continuing education classes. With the constant changes in national, state and local laws, it is essential that we participate in more than the basic re certification classes!

It is just as important that we preview properties in our local market so we are aware of what is currently on the market. In addition to that, Realtors need to educate themselves in the latest building techniques that are suitable for their area of the country. For example, I am sure you don't worry about hurricane codes for new windows if you live up in New Hampshire! But there are probably other codes specific to your area that I would know nothing about living down in Florida!

Too many Realtors get their license and never attend more than the basic continuing education classes that are required for license renewal. In my opinion, they are not serving their clients well. Clients need to ask their Realtor what continuing education they have taken and in what areas they are experts!

There are so many designations available to us as Realtors and I truly believe it is beneficial to the growth of our business and our own reputation as Realtors that are a cut above the rest to increase the number of designations we have.

This is a business and as any business we have to constantly hone our skills to be the best of the best!

Nice post it's so important to re-invest in yourself through education. The world is changing so quickly and young people have so many more tools at their disposal that we have to keep up.

Stretching thought processes is a great thing Barbara-Jo! Gaining designations take commitment and dedication to the real estate industry and it does not go unnoticed! I had an agent in SLC to call and congratulate me on getting my GRI!

Barbara-Jo, I so agree.. learning is a journey and not a destination.  Those who stop learning new things to better themselves are not doing themselves nor their customers a favor.
