What does it mean to work from a virtual office?

What does it mean to work from a virtual office?

It means harnessing the resources available via technology and the Internet to conduct a fully functional and thriving business from anywhere at any time!  Instead of an office, a desk, and a leather chair, all you need is cell phone, a laptop and a mobile broadband card.

Many agents ask during our initial phone call, “Evan, where is your office”?  I am careful when I answer. If I say, “I am in Burlington,” the agent's immediate reaction may be, "that's too far away," or "that's not a convenient location for me."

In fact, our office is in Burlington; that is, our mail is delivered to Burlington, but I work from a virtual office. That means I am mobile. I am ready to plug in wherever I happen to be.  I have access to all my files, contracts, agent docs, buyer and seller leads in a database housed online in a very dynamic paperless pipeline system. If I am on a public computer, my laptop, my iPhone or iPad, I can work with full access to any resource I might need.  THAT IS VIRTUAL, and at RRG, we will assist you in becoming virtual, too.

"But Evan, won't I need an office to meet with a client?"  It's a new world, old friend. Make that meeting happen at DD or Starbucks or Panera Bread. Look around. Everybody's doing it. And your client will feel more relaxed in a social environment. Do you think anybody misses an unnecessary drive to a stuffy office and the offer of a cup of day-old coffee?

Another definition of a "virtual office" is a computer program that allows agents to meet on-line to confer, share, learn, and enrich. Others do this, by the way, and it is very cool. But the real significance of a “virtual office” is the capability to meet with anyone, to work from anywhere, anytime, seamlessly, which is how we do it at the Russell Realty Group.

So, our business model is quite simple: no office costs, higher splits, more freedom to accompany agents on appointments, the ability to work in the field and meet agents throughout Greater Boston in a place that is convenient for everyone, not just the broker.  The Russell Realty Groupis designed around YOU!

Good post, Evan.  I'm working virtually right now.  My Droid helps with this too.  The only time I don't have access to all my files is when I'm actually driving from virtual office A to virtual office B.  A and B being networking meetings or properties I'm looking at.

I answer my EVO/Droid phone at my HOME, in my CAR and at my OFFICE.  I try to only be in my OFFICE 5 to 7 hours a WEEK so when people want to meet me at my office, they are at a disadvantage if they want to "catch me".

We use several program Shannon, the best tool for the group is google docs.  We use Google a ton to share files and colaberate in real time on documents, ( really helps cut down on emails).  We use online file storage aswell.

Thanks for stopping by.

Ann we use box.net, and the iphone/ipad apps allows to basicly have a huge file cabinet of documents with us every minute of the work day.

Good points Wallace.  The technology in the phones now a days means you can basicly run a business if need be from the iphones and Droid themselves!

Evan,

Ten years ago when we opened our Realty business, we decided to go virtual.  There's only been three times folks have asked to meet me at our office in that time.  It's interesting that it's been that few, as most all of what we do is with customers showing properties and working on the computer.  Very little use for a separate sticks and bricks model.

Love the lack of overhead!

All the best, Michelle
