Tip Jar: In Philly, You Gotta Tip

By
Real Estate Agent with The Somers Team at KW Philadelphia

In this econpmy if you are eating out and enjoying life, you gotta tip 20%, no less. That's my opinion.

A quick poll in my office of the first 10 people who would answer my question "When you are out at a restaurant, what would you tip?" revealed 80% said they'd tip 20% of the total tab. 20% said 10-15%, depending on the service. Of the 80% tippers, 30% said that 20% is a minimum and they are known to tip more for home delivery or in restaurants they frequent.

I say "Way to go!" to the big tippers and "Boo!" to the tightwads. Though I admittedly sometimes "feel" poor service is not worth tipping at all.

What is your tipping policy?

Unless the service is very poor, 15% to 20% is reasonable.

My daughter graduated from college last May and wanted to waitress for a few months before starting the "real" job search.  The tip stories she told - oh my!  Good tippers are out there, but the cheapskates are woefully in abundance.

Personally, I think 15-20% is fine depending on where the server falls in the quality department.  Less than that you are sending a message (at least I am.) But routinely less than that is just plain cheap.

Chris ia a hefty tipper. In a weird way that always makes me feel slightly prowd and special to be with him.  He doe not do it to be a big shot and anyone who knows him knows what I mean. He does it out of graciousness.

Hi Christopher and Stephanie,

20%, but I have to admit I resent any "big spender" friends who make me feel like a tighwad when I don't want to tip 25% for average service.  I think some people get a little carried away with this stuff.

Chris and Stephanie, My husband and I both tip 20%.  Have had family and many friends as waiters and waitresses so know what they go through.  If we get bad service though, it may be less!!!
