Parade in Searcy Arkansas. Queen on float and old buildings downtown.

Perhaps I'm stuck on parades!  Perhaps you are tired of them but here's another one.  Searcy Sleuths should be able to name this girl and the approximate time of the parade.

What I like best are the buildings in the background.  Searcy Bank , Headlee's Rexall, and some that are not readable but still in the memories of the Sleuths.  Isn't the Dr. Pepper sign where we now find Sowell's Furniture?

A word about the girl's fur coat!  They used to be the thing to wear and now you might be ridiculed if you went out in public in one.  She appears to have a second fur over her knees.

Let's hear from you, Searcy Sleuths.  Give it the old who, what, why, when and where.

Barbara,

I remember parades like that when I was a kid. They still have them here, but it was more fun way back then.

Even with my magnifying glass I can't I.D. the girl on the float.  I'm thinking it is a Homecoming Float..because of the mums she is holding in her lap.  My guess is Ora Dell Huffstuttler but that's just a guess.  She was way ahead of me in school.

Would the store next to Headlee's Rexall be the Pastime Billiard Parlor?  It was in that block somewhere.   And the Dr. Pepper sign would have been above Smith-Vaughn Mercantile.

Paula said Anita would probably ID the girl. We can't. That's the Economy Market, 305 N. Spruce tel. 18, with the Birdseye and 7UP sign and next to it is the Royal Cafe. The picture is probably mid 40's. I bet the Pastime Billiard Parlor went into the building after the Economy Market. The market was there in 1942 according to my 1941-42 yearbook.

Here's the girl with digital magnification if that would help anyone.

Headlee's Rexall was 303 N. Spruce....and the Sanitary Market is 317 N. Spruce, phone l96.   You are probably right about the Economy Market being next to the Royal Cafe, and the Sanitary Market is on down, next to Garrison's Jewelers.

Don and Anita, thanks for jumping right in and identifying the buildings.  Anita, did you loan me this picture?   I can't remember where I got all these wonderful old pictures.  Some from you; some from Don; some from the Historical Society and some from my deceased mother-in-law.  But they are now wonderful to review, aren't they?

Don and Anita again.  I didn't realize that Headlee's Drug Store was ever in that location!!

Barbara:  a quick brief history of Searcy.  There were 2 Headlee's drugstores:  Headlee's Drugstore, located in it's original location where you know it: 204 N. Spring, phone 60.....it was owned and managed by Frank Headlee.  The Headlee's Rexall Drugstore, phone 500,  was also owned by Frank but managed by his son, Frank "Sonny" Headlee.  both were pharmacists.  It was the Rexall store where all the high school crowd gathered after school.

I didn't give you those pics. I'm thinking they might have come from Winnie.

Anita, I showed this picture to Jim Baugh Jones and he said that he didn't know the girl but it was for sure a homecoming parade and he said that the entire block of stores there burned except for the bank building.  He is a somewhat younger historical oracle himself.  He also said there were two poolhalls, I think, owned by the same family, and one was on this street.

P. S. Anita.  You didn't gather at this one because it was beside a pool hall did you????

Personally, I don't remember the pool halls at all but this entry in the Searcyyesteryear blog says there

were 3 parlors at one time.

3 What was the name of the pool hall downtown?  Suanne Riddle’s Answers 8/27/09

There were 3 pool halls in Searcy, one was Past Time Parlor, one was owned by Mr. Lane, the other two by the Kelloughs as in Larry Kellough's father (I may be misspelling that but you get the drift) We would walk through the alley from the old high school to eat at the Royal Cafe (owned by Noel Hipp) and the smell could ruin the appetite. That was before they came up with that rule that you couldn't go out for lunch.

There are some interesting comments about Searcy that you blog readers might like to read here.

There's also a plug for Barbara's blog in this piece.

My memory is that Mr. Killough's pool hall was the Pastime Billiard Parlor, but guess not according to the above.  I do remember passing by it, on our way to the drugstore, and looking the other way so as not to appear interested in anything going on in there.  I distinctly remember the smell of stale beer and stale smoke "wafting" out the door.

Elizabeth Capps, relative of Ora Dell Huffstuttler, doesn't think that is Ora Dell on the float.   Shall she forever remain a mystery?

Barbara, That has to be a Christmas parade. Look a the greenery on the float and the fur.

What a great town Searcy is and I'm with you. I love a parade.

Don, thanks for the link to the other blog.

Anita, another probing question for you.  You said that you and your friends "turned your heads the other way" when passing the pool hall but distinctly remember the smell of stale beer and stale smoke.  How did you know what those smells were?   LOL

Charles, I believe you're right about the parade.

Nutsy godson.  I do hope that  was not a hidden revolver that you pulled.  When you come to Arkansas, you'd better not bring that thing.  We have lots of squirrel hunters, as you know.  You'd be gone pronto and it would be "self defense."  Case closed.

Anita, was it because we heard the older citizens talking about the horrid smell when they passed those establishments?  I think that is why I knew.

I don't remember when there were 3 pool halls in Searcy.  I only remember 2.  1 was on the West side across from the court house and the other one was on Main St. down across the street from the Mayfair Hotel. Maybe even next door to the Lure Cafe.

I"m with you, Ludean, about only remembering the two pool halls....

As to the "odor"  I'm thinking it was so prominent, we could still smell it even with our heads turned.  Having said that, I sometimes "sneaked" a look inside, as I quickly passed by.  I think they kept the front door open in warm weather.   Now that we're still on the subject, does someone want to tell the difference in pool, billiards, and snooker?   How about Mr. SmartyPants, Nutsy.  I'm sure he'll know.

The second pool hall was on Spring Street, not Main Street.  My mistake.  You know how it is with memory when old age sets in.

I don't think the pool halls had air conditioning, as not many businesses did then.  They opened doors and turned on fans.

My home didn't have air conditioning either and in the summertime, it was HOT.  I stayed outdoors as much as possible.
