Cork Flooring - In honor of Earth Day

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

Since it's Earth Day, I figured I would share some info on cork flooring.  In the last few weeks, I've had more and more requests for cork flooring which is so cool.  As you can see, cork flooring has really come a long way...see the variety of options out there.

Westchester Cork flooring

By far, the most popular spot for cork flooring is the KITCHEN.  Why??? Because it's softer on your feet - it has more give - much easier to stand on for long periods of time vs. tile.  Also, cork is warmer than tile and much easier to clean.

Cork is a green product.  To find out why cork flooring is green, check out my post for that - interesting info on how it's made and how it's doubly green.

Cork flooring with border - Westchester NY

Cork comes in a variety of colors and styles - most of them similar in color to hardwood. They usually come in planks that click together (usually 1 ft x 3 ft or 8" x 3 ft). You can also get creative with them and create borders.  We are about to do one in the opposite color vs. this picture - light floor/dark border.

It's surprising to many that cork flooring holds up very well - even to pets.  I've had many people (who I don't know) come up to me at home shows and rave about the cork flooring and how easy it is to clean and how it's held up to their dog.

Cork tends to be a bit more expensive than hardwood...provided that you get a good brand.  You can get cheaper versions, but I would caution you away from those as they don't have as many coats of polyurethane.  Cork is imported product, so it's important to buy from a reputable brand.  One of my favorite brands is Natural Cork.  Their products contain 5 coats of poly and come with a 25 yr warranty.

Debbie, that is so cool that cork is being used for flooring. I am going to start saving up my wine corks so I can DIY it! ;) I have heard that bamboo is supposed to overtake wood in the future because it grows so rapidly. It is much more sustainable than wood. Is the case similar for cork?

Cork flooring - I recently got a client to consider it for their condo and am sure the neighbors below appreciated the new flooring once it was installed!!

Wieder Realty - LOL on the DIY. Although, I will say that since cork is a floating clickable floor some people can install these themselves, but they often forget to leave a 1/4" around the side for expansion/contraction.

Anyway, I do sell a lot of bamboo and it is definitely rising in popularity (and clearly grows quickly).  But, I don't think it will overcome oak in the US for 2 reasons: 1) many people want to match what they already have - which is oak, 2) oak hides dents/scratches better and is easier to refinish and holds the stain better.  They are both grreat products.  You need to find what's right for the style and usage of the home.

Good morning Debbie,

Congratulations on the feature article. I missed it but was re-blogged so I caught it! Very interesting product..we don't see much cork flooring but might in the future..your idea of it being in the kitchen because it is easier to stand on is a great reason!

Debbie, we have cork flooring in our kitchen and dining area and it's great.  I selected it because I don't really like hardwoods, I needed something softer under foot (and warmer) than tile and other options.  My only complaint is that it has some serious sun fade by a sliding door but I can deal with it.  WHen I was looking (5+ years ago) it was VERY difficult to find at retailers and none that had it knew anything about it.  We self installed and except for some difficult cuts, it's was easy.

Dorie - Thx a bunch.  Just spoke to Robert & Julie yesterday who say hi.

Brian - Yes, it's great option, but it does cost a bit more.  If it's just a kitchen, usually the difference i n price isn't too bad.

Ginger - Oh, good, glad to hear that.  i think they make w/ more coats of poly now, so that prob. helps.

Patricia - Yes, it's come a LONG way.  And, thx.

David - Thx so much.  What a sweet thing to say.  Yes, everyday should be earth day.

Debbie, happy belated Earth Day.  Cork flooring certainly is beautiful as well as environmentally friendly.  And a 25 year warranty is more than you could really ask from any other type of flooring as well.

Cork flooring is really nice however, one thing I heard is that it dents easily if you put something heavy or sharp on it. Has that been your experience?

Silvia - thx and same to you.

Jill - Usually if you get a dent, it will bounce right back, but it's not good to put very heavy objects on there (e.g. cabinets w/ granite countertops.  You're supposed to install the cabinets first and then put the cork up them so that they can properly expand/contract throughout the seasons.

Debbie - I can't believe I missed this post - thankfully I saw in on a rebog! I love cork flooring and think it is so cool looking and I bet it doesn't show dirt either. I've seen this on HGTV and it seems to be very popular - I'd love to see it in person! Congrats on the feature!
