Earth Day Vow: Green Up Your Lawn Maintenance
Now that we know chemical fertilizers and weed killers harm more than
the pests in our yards, we agree it is time to rethink our lawn maintenance.
Going green is pretty simple but the lawn might not be a verdant green
for the whole spring, summer, fall season. We can live with that.
Earth Day Vow: Green Up Your Lawn Maintenance
Everyone likes to see a nice green lawn around their home.
The questionable part for us in the past has been the amount of
chemicals that we thought we had to add to get that thick green turf.
Not so, say the Green Experts. In honor of Earth Day 2011, we will
try to put fewer chemicals on our grass and make a healthier place
for the birds and the bees in our yard.
Adding nitrogen to your lawn is what makes it green.
There are several ways to do this without relying on chemicals:
- leave grass mulch on the lawn
- mulch leaves and let them decompose over winter
- compost or organic sources of nutrients, ie blood, cottonseed, or fishmeal
- autumn fertilizing is the best choice
If you fertilize in summer, you are just feeding the weeds!
