The La Costeña Feel the Heat Jalapeno Eating Championship will once again be held in Market Square in San Antonio this year!
La Costeña jalapeños are the number one selling jalapeños in America. This annual professional eating competition marks the beginning of La Costeña's summer-long "The Spice is Right Tour." The main goal of the tour is to demonstrate how to turn everyday meals into full-flavored dishes with just the right amount of spice. Something we already know how to do pretty well here in SanA ntonio!!
The La Costeña Feel the Heat Jalapeno Eating Championship in San Antonio is also held in honor of Cinco de Mayo...so it is usually help during the first part of May. The 2011 competition will be held on May 1st.
Professional eaters from all over come to Market Square to partake in the fiery competition.
For the past 4 years there has been a HOT battle between Pat Bertoletti and Sonya Thomas for the prestigious title of World Jalapeno-Eating Champion. Pat currently holds the top spot. Last year Pat consumed 275 whole pickled jalapeños in 10 minutes...beating Sonya by only 1 jalapeño!
We will have to see this year if one of them will come out on top again...or maybe a new-comer will take the prize!
Speaking of the prize...La Costeña is heating thins up even more this year with a prize of $6,250!
The event starts at 11am with the 11 a.m. with the La Costena ‘Feel the Heat' Culinary Challenge and the La Costena ‘Feel the Heat' Jalapeno Eating Championship Challenge will be help at 1 p.m.
