The Active Rain point system, isn't it neat?

Recently at a networking function I came across someone else in the profession who recognized me from my blog here on Active Rain. The person started talking to me about blogging and distracted me from my purpose of networking and creating real estate deals. After what they said to me I was glued to the floor explaining to them the purpose of a blog.

"I can post on Active Rain too. Just write anything: blah, blah, blah, and get points too. So I can be just like you Mike Wong with a gazillion points". "Blah, blah, blah, points, points, points, see that's easy! I'm going to pass you up in no time"

Good luck with that. You should blog just like what you just told me.

It's NOT a point competition. I don't blab out pointless blogs for points. I don't abuse the system. I blog with a purpose: to provide relavent content and information related to my business to generate leads and greater exposure online. Do you just look at my points or did you read one of my blogs?

"Huh?"

He or She who has the most points does not win, there is always someone with more and someone else coming up. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT POINTS TO ME. Apparently to some people who don't know any better it is all about the points. Once you get to a certain level and recognize the results, then you will understand it as well. The points are an extra bonus, yes I enjoy EARNING them and positioning myself in the Rain, but there is another purpose to my blogging.

Some people regurgitate the same information several times per week for points, like daily mortgage rates. Maybe they just can't get it right the first time? Others can barely compose a logical paragraph of minimal sentences to submit, yet they post a bunch of these entries per day. I came across one blog where the member posts daily. His content was just naming street names in his city. Each day I think he mentions 4 streets in 4 sentences. I wonder when he will graduate to neighborhoods and actual market reports?

IF YOU ARE FOCUSED ON JUST THE POINTS, YOU MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT

I try to blog with a purpose. My intention is to provide local market information, industry news and commentary, events, and once in a while broadcast my listings. All my posts revolve around my specialization and services in the real estate industry. My result is traffic, phone calls, leads, and business, the points are just a by product of my work and success here on Active Rain.

If you know how to use Active Rain as a business tool you would understand the benefits are not the points. If you happen to check in and read this, hopefully you start to get MY POINT.

I totally agree that content is important.  Being higher on the leaderboards might help your visibility, but quality content even with low numbers, as well as creating relationships across the states resulting in referalls are essential as well.  It's the total process here on AR and there's nothing like a warm lead that calls, saying, Yeah, I was reading your blog...."  Nice reminder Mike.

I do notice many of the more frequent bloggers with the higher points add interesting stuff on a steady basis.

For competitive people its the points, for the writers and readers its the content.

Thanks for the reminder, just in time as I ponder what to write today.  When potential clients find me, what do I want to be saying to them?

Mike, regurgitating with points even for them will get old and they will go away. No one will pay attention to them. It is silly to think that way.

Good morning Mike. This is why I am a little against the challenges to do a blog a day for a month. The quality of the blog goes down hill hard when you are blogging for points or challenges. I love reading good posts but some days it is a challenge just sorting out the good from the point chasers.

Cara you totally get what I'm saying! I forgot about all the great friendships I've made from Active Rain!

Paul we all have our reasons and purpose here on Active Rain, that is a great summary.

Tracie that is exactly what I think about and why Active Rain has worked for me.

Gary you are right. It's pretty obvious the difference in commitment by the style and content.

Randy I thought about that as well. Personally my challege was to come up with relavent content during the challenge. It does get harder as I start to run out of ideas.
