Speechless Sunday - Muddy Redwood

Redwood with mud coated burn scarMuddy Redwood

Although it sounds like the name of a west coast blues singer, the Muddy Redwood from the title doesn't sing. In fact, this Muddy Redwood is famous only to the few people who hav hiked on the 87 acre property near Guerneville this redwood lives on.

During a long ago episode, a nearby creek backed up creating a muddy reservoir this tree occupied for a short time. The tree has an old burn scar that is out of the reach of most rains, so the mud has persisted for many years.

Hi Dave:Interesting... I wonder how old the mud is? Would be interesting to see the impurities imbedded and compare with the airborne impurities of today...

Gay - I think this is old, but not ancient mud. We'll have to stick with glaciers and ice sheets to really look at old air.

Dave, was the mud put on the Redwood to protect where it was burned.

Paul - The mud is a natural deposit from previous flooding. Its location within the burn scar has protected it from the rains which have washed off all the other mud on the outside of the tree. Redwoods, many of them ancient, seem to handle burns quite well on their own.
