Every Day, In Every Way, We're Marketing Ourselves

I just watched a video on how authors can make sure they sell more than a few books after all the hard work of writing them. As you may have guessed, the tips were all about marketing the book in various ways. The speaker made a special point of trying to counteract what I imagine is a fairly typical negative reaction of many writers to the idea of marketing their work.

Market Sign

And it occurred to me that, really, we market ourselves many times every day, to a vast array of audiences, no matter what we're doing. Sometimes it's actually directly about our work, our products or our services. But many times it's just part of daily living.

When we move to a new town, we may "market" ourselves to other parents to establish a new community of friends. We join groups that interest us, and then "market" their events to get the word out about them, to fund raise, to get new members.

We greet people with a smile, shake their hands, listen with interest, and contribute to the conversation. If our help is sought, we look for solutions and resources to recommend. We do this every single day in the normal course of life.

So why does "marketing" become a negative word and concept when it's labeled as such? It's an unnecessary distinction that can make us anxious and unsure of how to proceed. When all we really need to do is start by being interested enough to make a personal connection and seeing if we can make a difference in someone's life.

Have you marketed yourself today?

Hi Tish - Yes, I think that's true. Too many bad memories of awful, pushy salespeople can give marketing a really bad name.

Hi Debbie - Cool quote! I love how you attributed it - to  "I forgot but some marketing guru"

Hi Susan - I totally agree. Who we are makes the deepest impression on people, so it's really important to align who you are with what you do best, I think.

Judy:

You are so clever.  I actually think marketing got a bad name from sales people who used "hard sell" tactics.  Selling does not have to be forced on people.  No one is comfortable with that style of marketing.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Evelyn - Thanks so much! I think you're right - and it leaves behind a feeling of negativity for many. It just takes a little bit of a change in attitude to make marketing a much more positive and normal part of our lives.

Judy - If you want to make a name for yourself and your company, Marketing is key! Sell a great product, give the best customer service and then the referrals start piling in and you can spend less time marketing, but like you say - we are always marketing outselves even in unconventional ways - the easiest kind!

Hi Kristine - You are right! It's key to follow up our marketing with great products and our very best customer service. That will certainly underline all we've been saying in our marketing efforts and will help continue the cycle - and make our businesses suucessful. Thanks.

No fear of marketing here. I'm a tasteful self promoter. Or is that shameless self marketer? Either way contribute positively and it will come back in a positive way.

Judy - thank you for reminding us of this very important fact.  Funny story that happened yesterday. Our office is sponsoring a T-Ball team and, after practice yesterday, I ducked into a local grocery store for a couple of things we needed at home.  Here I am, cut off jean shorts, t-shirt, ball cap and tennis shoes fresh from throwing grounders and pop-flys and hoping I don't run into anyone I know.

Of course, you know this means I turned a corner and ran smack into my newest buyer clients.  For a nano-second I was mortified!!  Then I thought "hey, at least they know I'm human" so I proceeded to tell them about our T-Ball team and how much fun the little ones are (they are 5-7 years old) and they thought it was awesome that we took time from work to do something for the community.

Hi Bill and Cyndi - That is absolutely great! Most people will respond very well to the idea that you're giving back to the community - as your clients did. Thanks so much for sharing this; it's terrific.

Judy,

Good post. You are right we do "market" ourselves everyday. My son is a market researcher and there is so much psychological data going on in the marketing of products. We touch people in many ways that markets us good or bad.

well said Judi - I think the only word that's dirtier than "marketing" is "sales"  - so many are in denial that selling is what we do all day every day whether we like it or not.
