Can you picture yourself as an owner of a grand estate? Now is your chance to own Washington Well Farm  - the fabulous 8+ acres estate in Skillman, NJ and to become part of the American architectural heritage. The story of this home begins in 1753, when Joost Dureya bought 260 acres of land and made it his homestead. He lived in this home with his two wives and his son Simon, who served in the Revolutionary War.

 Wahington Well Farm
Surviving to this day, in addition to the main house, are numerous other buildings: the barn -some experts say there are only four like that left in the state; an English carriage house, an out – kitchen , a building with a big "cooking" fireplace and two rooms, and the famous Well, located across the street form the main property. Interestingly, the burial ground of the Dureya family, is behind the property, as it was customary in the days of the early settlers.

The estate’s notoriety and its present name come from this well, which is situated on 2.3 acres of land. The legend has it that the Continental Army was passing by the home on a very hot summer day. The soldiers were so thirsty, they drank the well dry.

Today, you will find the main house to be a gracious home with 8 fireplaces, original pumpkin floors, 4 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, many original details combined with modern amenities. The estate of such stature, also has is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom beautiful legal apartment with a separate entrance, which can be used in many ways.

Faina- I was going to ask you how much, but Missy already did. Those are good prices for the historic value and the land. I would think it would be much more as we hear here about how high prices are up north in your neck of the woods. Katerina

Katerina - it's a great home for someone who appreciates the uniqueness, charm and history that can't be really replicated. How many new homes will be there in 250 years? Most likely -not many, or none.

What a fabulous listing!  Congratulations.  The only thing I can't find is the price... Katerina commented on it, so I know it must be there...

Thanks for commenting on my post earlier today.

Faina- That would be very sad indeed! We don't have historical homes in Wellington. It was swamp land years ago. Katerina

Katerina - it's pretty amazing that 250 years ago people were building homes that will last for generations. This home, of course, has been added to through the years, but many original features survived the test of time. Thanks for your deep appreciation of the value of history in our homes and lives.

Gena -I love the little award thing. I'll place it on my night table, since this is where my laptop has been residing lately. It was fun, and this home deserves the award. Thanks.

Fabulous!  I feel like I just went on an historic home tour.  What are "pumpkin floors"?

Ardell - I am glad you enjoyed the virtual tour. Of course, I am available for personal tours for anyone interested. "Pumpkin" floors are hardwood floors, often used in the old homes (they are orange color).

thanks for posting the history and photos. It was forwarded to some of  the descendents of Joost Duryea  and we enjoyed reading it. We wish we had the money to buy the homestead and the family burial ground.
