Almost Wordless Wednesday: The Drive Way

Royal Gorge

On Easter Sunday, a friend and I went to see the Royal Gorge for the first time.  The Royal Gorge is Colorado's version of the Grand Canyon. It is about an hour south of Colorado Springs.

Carole Watt and her husband, operate their business, Watt Mule Company, at the Royal Gorge, 7 days a week.  They give people tours of the Royal Gorge on their mules.  Mules are very sure footed animals and they allow you to see places that can't be seen from a car.  Due to the weather....it rained and snowed while we were out there, we opted to not take the tour on the mules this time.

However, I was blessed with the opportunity to visit with Carole, whom I just adore.   Turns out that she and her husband live off the grid at the Royal Gorge.  That means their "house" does not have electricity.  The only water they have is what they bring in.  At the moment, they do not even have indoor plumbing.  On the other hand, see the bridge at the top of the picture?  That is part of their drive way.

More pictures and additional posts will be forthcoming.  Note:  The building in the right hand side is the gift shop.  It has electricity.  They live on the other side of the bridge and further up the hill.

What a great picture and an exciting way to live. Off the grid sounds idyllic.

WOOOOOWWWWWW....my dad woulda FREAKED!  He was very afraid of heights...I never knew it until I climbed a huge  rock at the Oregon coast with him and was looking over the side and looked back and he was clutching onto some bushes and begging me to back up....it was funny and it surprised me, too...because I always thought he was infallible.

That truly looks like one of those photos you see sent around the world with all of the  most unusual homes on the planet--unbelievable!

great shot missy!

Just pulling up this picture made my stomach turn!  Whenever family visits, it is always my sweet husband that takes them to the Royal Gorge because if I can't look at the pictures, I'm sure not going to be able to cross the little bridge :) . . . great picture, though!  Give me Pikes Peak anyday :)

That is an amazing house Sondra, and no water, and no indoor plumbing. Awesome view but those folks must really like roughing it. Those mules would be fun to do that with them being sure footed. In the Grand Canyon I understand there is a waiting list for that and they are wondering about their hooves crumbling the trail from so many visitors. Very interesting lifestyle for Carole and her husband. I guess no playing in the front yard for the kids unless they take up hang gliding.

I first went to the Royal Gorge in the summer of 1973 after high school graduation. Then I went again in 1994 and took Jim in 1999 as part of our fifth anniversary United States tour. It never disappointed, but the most fun (for me) and the most frightening (to Jim) was the helicopter ride.

That would scare the heck out of me. I don't think I could EVER drive on that road and not be in a panic.  But beautiful views I'll bet.

That certainly looks precarious right there on the cliff.  I'd have a heart attack if I looked down!
