What do I need in a disaster?

Last night we had super cell thunderstorms and tornados all around us. Thankfully none got close enough to cause damage, but many people were hurt and killed in this latest round of violent weather.

Before the storms hit, I thought about what I needed in case of disaster. I came up with this list. It is not a complete list, but it might get you to think about what you really need with you in case of a disaster.

1. Water  We took a case of water down to the basement in case we lost water.

2. A Battery powered radio  We got one of the kids old boom boxes, put fresh batteries in, tested it, and pre-set the station to a weather channel and took it to the basement.

3. Medicines and first aid kit  We made sure that whatever medicines we needed plus our household first aid kit was in the basement.

4. Food  You never know how long you might be stuck in a basement so we took a bag of snacks to the basement.

5. Flash lights  I rounded up three working flashlights and put them in the basement.

6. We all made sure our cell phones were charged up in case of lost power.

6. My wallet  I figured in a bad situation, having my identification and some money on me would be good.

7. Other stuff  Since we had a bit of time before the storms were due to hit and we had already taken care of the above items, I grabbed my video and still cameras, my passport, and all the car keys and took them downstairs. We had already moved the two best cars inside the garage and pulled the other two up close to the house and away from the pine trees in the front yard.

Luckily, we did not need any of these precautions. But what if we did? You should have a pre-prepared list of items you will need in an emergency and even have some items pre-positioned in a safe place. As an Eagle Scout I wanted to live up to our motto, "Be Prepared".

Good Morning Peter, you have a good point. Develop a list to work from, continue to update it and follow it when there is an emergency.

Good points. Some folks would say oh, don't talk disaster and don't like the topic. But those folks were not boy or girl scouts. Be prepared. Running out of food in any period in your home town would be a natural disaster and growing your own may be in the cards with a big garden this year right?
