Stepping out of the Real Estate box for a moment

I'm a self proclaimed weather geek.  Mother Nature is an incredible force and, as we've seen over the past few days, her wrath is unstoppable.

Here in the Rain, we've made some wonderful friendships with fellow realtors down south.  As I sat and watched the reports yesterday, I couldn't help but think of my AR friend in Birmingham, Charita.  I was praying and hoping all was well with her.  Thankfully, she's fine.

They're saying that this is the 3rd worst tornado outbreak in history but that could change as people and rescue workers begin their grim task of searching through the rubble.

I'm so blessed to live in the southwest where tornadoes just don't happen.  You'll see a dust devil in the desert but that's about it.  I can't help but feel my heart breaking for our friends in the south.

I was inspired to write this after reading a great tweet this morning - "Instead of buying any trinkets for a wedding of people we don't know in palaces, let's give to @redcross for our neighbors down South."  I couldn't agree more.

*The American Red Cross is where I always go when something like this happens.  You can check with your local chapters to see if they are accepting monetary donations.  Suffice to say that if you don't live in an affect area, cash is the best way to go.

*I'm sure that animal shelters are going to need monetary help as well with pets that have been separated from their families.  The Humane Society of America should have information for you.

Be very careful of scammers.  You know they crawl out from under their rocks when tragedy hits.  There are a number of ways they'll try to get your money - phone calls, emails and probably on social networks.  Don't fall for them.  Donate to reputable organizations.  If in doubt, look them up at Guidestar or Charity Navigator.  Both of these check charities and non-profits on a regular basis.

I hope and pray that all of our Active Rain friends are safe.
