What's blooming!

By

Unlike many of you that live in say Canada or Alaska, it's Spring down here in North Carolina.  Has been for many months, and last week all the green leaves on the trees came out.

So in honor of Spring, and to show you extreme Northeners what you can look forward too when the snow melts, here are some pictures of what's blooming in my back yard.  Some of them remain unidentified to me, so if you know what it is, let me know!  The ones I know I titled, so put your cursor on the pics to find which are which.

We'll start with the whites:

Unidentified flower

Wild Blackberry

Umbrella tree bloom

Then the purples/pinks (with some white):

Iris

IrisesClematis

Unidentified violet/blue flowersPhlox (or Thrift to you Southerners)Gerbera Daisy

The fourth one is interesting:  it only opens in the mornings, and it's actually quite purple to the eye.  The camera shows it as a blue, though.  I'd love it if anyone could tell me what that one is!

The reds, yellows/golds:

ColumbineCoreopsis

Unknown tall flower & short marigolds

So I hope you enjoyed the Spring Tour 2011 of the Wrenn Estates.  We tried to come up with a fancy name for our property like they have in Pride and Prejudice (Longbottom or Pemberly), but we got nothin'.  Feel free to name our "estate"!  :)

I like Wrenn Estates, it give a sense of openess and grandeur. And I really like the flowers. You have quite a variety.

Tom, we're on a 1/3 of an acre, so we don't have too much openess.  But granduer, we've got that! :)

Debbie, I'll ask my wife what she thinks.

If it helps for suggestions, we are at the bottom of a hill, next to a creek (Dunn Creek), in a cul-de-sac in a two street neighborhood.  Thanks for the thougths and suggestions!

Debbie, my wife said that our place is so not a Manderly.  I think it has something to do with the tinyness of the house.  :D

To help out with the naming thing, here is a photo of my front yard (yes, new roofing material in the driveway to replace the 20 year old roof).  See how romantic it is, with the fuzzy lighting and all?  Ok, so I had a dirty camera lens...

And then one of the back yard (not as romantic looking, because I cleaned the lens):

I like "House of Wrenn". Kinda like a castle name. Thanks for showing us Northerners good things to come. Now how about mosquito's? We don't have any of those.... yet.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bob!  It is very castle and coat of arms like.

Mosquitos are starting, but not bad yet.  It's been pretty wet this Spring, so I imagine it will get bad in the evening especially.

But nothing like what I saw in Ashland, Wisconsin (straight east on US 2!).  How bad are they in ND?

I went to a 2 week training in Devil's Lake in 1993 or so.  There were more midges there than mosquitos, as in hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of midges!  Got any of those around your place?

When they start to get bad here they call in The Air Force, really! Several of the cities in the Western part of the State have gone to this. It's a big slow plane I believe a C130 or some number like that and it makes several passes over the town completely annihilating any living mosquito's. Also directly across the street from me is a magnificent ball diamond called Corbett Field. They spray most every day before a ball game. On top of that we also live a half a block from the Zoo and they also spray often. With out these things you just would not be able to go out side but as it is we are really lucky. Here is a link to the info about these big planes

Yeah, there were a lot of little lakes and really wet areas when I was there.  I saw a bunch of ducks and shore birds as well, which I was not expecting!  I thought ND was more of a prairie field, but it's pretty wet there!

I don't envy your mosquitos, that's for sure!

Jeremy,

We are in bloom out here now also. 70's today. (it still could snow here though)

Warning from the inspector, watch that clematis I seen them take siding off of homes. Their beauty belies their danger ; )

Excellent!  Seems that the upper midwest (ND) and Canada are still in winter!

Yes, the clematis can grow quickly, so that's great advice.  It's on our side/back deck steps and my wife trims it about 2-3 times a summer.  We try to keep it far away from the siding!

I like the name Wrenn Estates. You could have a wren as your estate bird!

Russel, that seems to be the popular choice!  I'll start using it and see if it sticks.
