Common Consumer Complaints About Real Estate Websites

Website from hell! So, what is keeping your site from holding your visitors' interest?  Could be content, or lack thereof but, there are other reasons that folks just don't stay on your site.  Hopefully you've mastered all of the techniques to keeping the consumer on your site.  If you haven't, here are a few common complaints about real estate websites and how to remedy each of them:

1.  Slow Load Time:  Your readers, or should I say potential readers, will not wait for your site to load.  You wait because it's your site but, slow loading sites scare off potential readers.  Find out what is bogging your site down and correct it or your site will not do for you what you expect it to do.

2. You Have No Blog:  Your website should be all-inclusive.  Readers like to search for the items that are on their search 'mission list' (like 'what is my home worth?' or 'search for homes.'  Then, if they like what they find, they want to learn a little more from the site owner before calling.  Blogs are the best way to share your knowledge and even your personality with your readers.

3. Poor Quality Graphics / Photos:  You've spent countless hours building a site.  Poor quality graphics, including photos, only cheapen your site.  Take the time to add quality graphics to your site.

4. Broken Links:  If your consumer clicks on one bad link, chances are you've lost them.  If they click two, you have lost them!

5. Too Many Keywords:  No one likes reading keyword-stuffed posts.  Some are so keyword-stuffed that you can't understand the content that the writer is conveying.

Go back and review your site as though the eyes of your consumer--tweak, adjust, move things around a bit, update old posts, delete expired items and check your links.  It doesn't take a long time to do this if you review your site frequently enough.  View it as though you were a consumer--you'll be surprised at what you'll find that needs a little tweaking!

Dorky photos of the agent with their dogs, horse, whatever.. NEWS FLASH! THEY Don't Care!! GIve them something THEY want

On Sunday I saw a local Agent's ad that said "#1 in Sales Volume in X county" The foot note at the bottom of the page said "#1 in Sales Volume for 2007" To me, this is an example of poor self-promotion. Touting something from 4 years ago when the market was red hot.

great post. it should not be about "the million dollar producer", Top agent, it should be about results for the client. So why do so many focus on their awards, production, pictures, alphabet soup at the end of their name, and vanity pictures, and not on what the client wants and building stronger relationships based on service. Thanks for the humbling reminder

Debe - I agree with you.  I have spent a lot of time thinking on how ALL my marketing emphasizes what the benefits of choosing me.  It is hard to get the "me" out and talk about benefits.  Your post is a challenging one!!

Great post, there are too many agents sites that are self promoting. I still see a great deal of self promotion on websites and advertising with "top producer" and # 1 agent. We are there to perform a service and make the buying and selling process easier for our clients. Our clients need to know that we will put their needs first, that we care about them.

Thoughtful post and intriguing comments. I'm with Michael @ #55, and liked Karen @ #65 comment. Last week Susan Emmo wrote a great post about de-cluttering your website. Seems the tightrope's diameter is getting narrower and narrower on how to effectively market yourself.

Your absolutely right.  We have several of those "big time self-promoting" agent in our community, in our company.  One in particular is often the source of jokes.  She is so self promoting that unless she is the #1 agent in our company she will not attend any awards presentations.  She take great pride in putting down any other agent who she thinks is unworthy of her pat on the back.

Everyone in the company knows all of this as does the public yet the public still chooses to work with her..... certainly enough to keep her up there in the awards category each year.  So I am not sure that at some point the consumer thinks "this person must be really good".  So are you sure that self-promotion is not a very good thing?

Her website is just loaded with I am great as is her voice mail message.  You can never get her directly because she wants you to hear the message.  She calls right back but never answers on first rings.

I am in the process of website training and setting everything up for my website right now.  These are some of the things that we discussed about a website.  I definitely agree that the front page should be dedicated to THEM.  People visiting your site want to do some quick searches and get some quick information.  If they want to learn more about you as an agent they will click on your "about me" section to learn.  We also talked a lot about differentiating your website.  Prudential gives EVERY agent a quick, easy, form website that they set up and agents never really have to look at it.  However, revising their material or adding your own material to it is the only way to get up in a search engine or to differentiate yourself from others in your office.  I learned sooooooo many easy ways to do this and was able to look at some GREAT examples!  There are only 2 other agents in my office that have differentiated their website and put focus on quick searches and community information.  All the others are Prudentials "form" website.  Want to know how many people showed up for this training?  It was just me......  Sad, yet hopefully for me, that will help me gain some clients in the future. :)

Great post!  You can find out someone's life history on some of those things.  Most people are looking for houses to live in, not your autobiography.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

It's always amazing to view our business from someone else's perspective--especially the consumer.  I was reading a blog post last night that, after knowing what the consumer thinks of this self-promotion, "all about ME" take on business; reading the poste nearly made me ill!  It was ALL about the agent--how the clients love them, how they do everything better than everyone else, yada, yada.

Here's a thought--put yourself in the consumer's shoes:  If you were searching on a site, interested in utilizing a service provider, would you even THINK to select one that boasts about themselves?

In my humble opinion, those who are ALL about themselves have no consideration for their reader; 9 times out of 10 (probably 10 times out of 10 if you want to be truthful), the reader gets a 'cheesy,' unclean, dishonest feeling about the writer and thinks that they have something to hide.

Inman Agent Reboot reinforced this today!  I just wanted to stand up and shout,  "So you guys DO read my blog!!"  LOL
