James Dray/Exit Pro Realty (Exit Pro Realty) who rights some of the best blogs I read made a comment about a blog I wrote.  It had to do with the experienced agents sharing their knowledge with the newer people.  This is a commission business.  You only get paid when you sell.  It is very dog eat dog.  Unless you are the owner or a paid trainer why train your competition?

According to NAR the average age of today's Realtor is 54.  There are not a lot of young people entering this profession.  No pay, no paid vacations, no paid health programs, no paid holidays, etc.  Most real estate companies don't have formal training or ongoing training.  The hiring process consists of the potential agent fogging up a mirror and having a license.

The issue is there is no benefit to "helping" the new agent for the experienced agent.  Let them fail and there will be less competition for walk-ins or the call-ins.  If you recruited them and you get a portion of their commissions then you are motivated to help them.  This is the Amway way of doing business.

I volunteer and train at office meetings once a month.  I don't feel threatened by the new people.  I love the real estate business.  I want the young people to earn a good living by selling real estate.  I want them to become wealthy by owning real estate.  I want them to proud of being a Realtor.

Good morning, Conrad....if one agent helps another that's a sign that the agent who is helping is very secure with his/her business and is not threatened by helping others.

I have only been in the business for 5 years and was glad I had a very good mentor.  I did start out with a large referral of clients but I would rather have 75% of something than 100% of nothing.  So I welcomed any referrals to come my way.  It was by doing business this way that they didn't feel they were just giving me something.   They were getting something in return for all of my efforts that they schooled me through.

I have found I am more inclined to help new agents because of the way I was helped in the beginning.

I help just to help, not for monetary gain.  I feel it is just the right thing to do.

Just my thoughts...............

I found you through a re-blog!

I find that in MY office, agents go out of their way to share their knowledge and help other Realtors. Every Monday, we do a 1 1/2 hours workshop, frequently taught by an agent in our office, on a specific topic.  I have done:

  • how to communicate positively to your clients
  • How to jump start your business, and hit the ground running
  • How to use various real estate software our company has
  • How to prepare a seller's book
  • How to stay in touch with your clients, and others.

While I do these because I like to share knowledge, there are two other benefits I have received. First, I get better at what I teach just through the preparation.  Frequently, I remember things I had forgotten .

Secondly, I get referrals! shocked me.  But agents I teach from another office have referred business to me because they get a sense of who I am.  And agents in my office will refer me if it's a specialty buyer, or if they will be gone, or they are too busy, or they LEAVE THE BUSINESS.

Sharing your knowledge is a win-win.

That is so true Barbara.

Trial and error is an expensive way to learn Kwee.

Hi Sally - You have a very pro-active office.  I know what you mean about referrals from other agents.  It happens to me frequently.  Sharing is a win-win.
