This blog was written because of a simple request for help in starting a blog about staging.  Let me say that I am not expert in blogging, but have generated a lot of business because of it, so I feel that every professional in this industry should at least give it a shot.  If a small amount of guidance from me (and anyone else who wants to contribute) will get someone on the path to building a successful blog, I'm more than happy to share what I've learned.  So, Here it goes...

1. Blog about what you do.  This is about the most basic piece of advice anyone can give you, but it is the most important.  The reason you blog is to increase business.  Show people you know what you are doing and establish your expertise in your field.  Eventually you will be comfortable with branching out of your comfort zone.

2. Keep your audience in mind.  Who is this individual blog directed toward? Make sure you are speaking directly to them.

3. Always keep your ultimate goal in mind. The point of your blog is to generate business, so you are ultimately this is your online job interview. In this forum it is easy to get sidetracked in the social aspect of things and you should show that side of yourself, but be smart about it. Everything you say is used to decide whether you get hired or not.  Think about what you say and use the delete button if you have to.

4. Show pictures of your work. The proof is in the portfolio.  Show them your skills.

5. Don't over think it.  Let your words flow from you naturally. Agonizing over every word will drive you crazy and bring your blog to a stand still.

6. Don't pick too broad of a subject.  Be specific - it gives you more to write about later.

7. Write when you are inspired.  Sitting down to the computer with no direction makes blogging just a task you must complete and it will show in your writing. You also do not need to write just at the computer.  When a blog subject pops into my head, I write it down with a couple of notes and sit on it until I am really have it rolling in my head.

8. Control Yourself.  When the blogging bug finally bites, you will want to blog all the time about every little thing that pops into your head.  People will tire of you and you will burn out quickly.  Write some blogs elsewhere and post them later.  It will make blogging easier and give you a stronger readership.  Sometimes I write off of the top of my head and sometimes I just don't have the energy, so I look through my blog reserves and post one I may have written weeks ago. Craig Schiller is a good example of this.  He is a great blogger, but does not post very often.  People anticipate his blogs because they know he is good and what he posts will be worth reading.

9. Don't worry about original subjects.  Everything has probably been blogged about before, but not from your point of view.  We all have a unique approach to writing and our perspective are never 100% the same.  People want to hear what you have to say about it.

10. Be Yourself, but be mindful of others.  Our opinions are as varied as our personalities. Everyone will not agree with you or you with them.  Just accept it and be respectful and polite about it. It all comes back to the job interview.  If you are rude and forceful about your opinions or disrespectful of others you will lose the job and possibly your audience.

Spend some time reading other blogs to get you started. Find out who inspires you and read them regularly. They may help you find your voice.

Most importantly, just do it.  Your first blog may not be your best, but it is always the hardest to get through.  Get it over with - you will feel better for it and you can always delete it later. ;)

Kimberly - There is a ton of great information here.  One thing I would add is that if you are trying to use your blog to get leads or jobs then you need to include the area where you work as well.  Thanks for sharing!

Could you add this post in Blogging & SEO  I am the moderator over there? We are always looking for blogs about blogging and Seo tips.

Maureen - Right on!  If they don't know where you are, it doesn't matter, right?  I hope people add more tips like this.  Fewer people will be 'blogging in the dark'.

If you think it will benefit the group, I will add it for you.  Thanks for thinking it has value :)

Kathy- I never thought I would blog about blogging - I haven't been doing it for a year yet, so I didn't really think I should.  However, if I can relieve someone's fears about it and get them blogging, why wouldn't I? That's the great thing about AR  - you don't have to know everything, but you can share what you know.

Teresa - I think we all get better at this every day.  I know I still have a lot to learn - I hope you share what you know, too!  Thanks for liking the picture.

Kim, This is wonderful! I LOVE this post. You know I'm "borrowing" all your ideas for my talk for one of my networking groups; right? You and Kathleen Lordbock are making my life easier. Thanks!

Kim, you are one of the people I always look forward to reading.  Your blogs are informative and well-written.  I especially like your advice in number 10.  The ability to disagree while being polite and respectful is difficult - but a must if like you stated, "You want to get the job and keep an audience."  Keep them coming...Betty

All good advice, but I especially like the ending - start. Just start with something.

  • Will they like me?
  •  Will anyone read it?
  •  Why are there no comments?
  • Was is any good?
  • Did I sound stupid?

The answers are yes and no , in no particular order.

Try to always add a photo that pertains to your topic  or just something interesting. We stagers especially are very visual people.

Be yourself, unless you are obnoxious and then be someone else.

thanks Kimberly.........I'm pretty new to blogging and I think you give some great advice here.  and by the way, I know how to put actual photos in blogs, but where does everybody find their non-personal photos to put into blogs?

Kimberly...

Thank you so much, that was a VERY nice compliment. I wish I had more time to write. God knows I have more I want to say.

As I get a bigger audience I try to create more compelling posts. Having 2 blogs now doesn't help as I need to split my attention across the 2.

PS: YOU are no slouch when it comes to writing either... as this post attests to.

Kimberly, I always look forward to reading what you have to say, when I get the time to be on AR.  Thank you for this post.  As I try to develop my blog, I will keep these tips in mind.

Yvonne - You are always welcome to 'borrow' from me. ;)

CoCo - You're welcome!

Betty - That is so nice of you to say!  I love your blog.  In my head I call it 'The Adventures of Betty and Margo'.  :)

Judy - I'm sure someone could explain it much more thoroughly than I (and probably has) but I know I have learned a lot from you, so I am flattered.

Kathleen - LOL!! Thanks for adding that - very well put.  The best way to learn is through trial and error, right?

Nancy - You can get photos from all over the web.  I know others have shared where they get theirs from - run a search on AR and I'm sure you will find some great resources.  I have a clip art program that I use for mine.

Craig - You are the original stager/blogger, I believe and it shows.  You put a lot of time and effort into what you write and everyone can tell. Thanks - I do enjoy writing, whether I am good at it or not.  I didn't realize how much I missed writing until I started blogging.  I actually makes this job more fulfilling, if  you can believe it.

Joelle - Thanks so much!

Thanks for the tips!  I have not started my blog yet because I analyze it too much.  Every time I think about it my anxiety goes way up - I am not a writer!   I am practicing by making comments - that is a start!

LeaAnn - Write a comment over 50 words and you have done a blog.  I can tell that there is a writer in you just waiting to be set free.

Karen- I love to help!  That's why I love my job!

LeaAnn - Don't stress over it too much.  Photo blogs are a great way to start - just add 'captions' to get you started on the writing thing.  Really, the longer the blog, the harder it is to keep someone's attention.  Short and sweet is good - especially when you are in the learning phase.  If you forgot something, no on will ever know...just save it for another blog!  And Kathleen is right - a blog only has to have 50 words.

Betty - I look forward to your next adventure!

Janice - Simplifying is always best - in subject matter and in staging!  I think you do a fine job and would never have known you were outside your comfort zone, but you will find a voice you are comfortable with if you just keep at it.

Kathleen & Kimberly - Thanks for the tips and encouragement on getting started.  My goal this week is to get my blog started!  50 words that is all I need - I can do that!  Do you always stick to staging topics or do you put other info as well?  Also what are the tags it talks about on the side?

Lea-Ann - You can blog about whatever you want, just make sure you post it in the appropriate group.  Example - If you are posting a recipe, only post it in the recipe group unless you have written it in a way that it will apply to another subject, or if you are posting something for localism like a restaurant review, don't post it in Stage it Forward.

The tags are key words that apply to your blogs so that when people are searching for that subject your blog will pop up. If you are writing a post about a property you just staged the tags should read something like 'home staging, indiana property, valparaiso indiana, staging project' and so on.  This post only has one tag- 'blogging'.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

Sue - So glad you find this useful.  I must confess, I find myself 'preaching to the choir' and have to stop myself and redirect to the general public.  I am still learning, too!

Juliet - I'm glad the photo is getting such rave reviews - even if it is of me!  Look forward to hearing from you!

I think this is a great blog and you should submit this to the next staging carnival *hint hint* ;)

I do have to comment on frequency though. It's important to have frequency AND consistency.  I think I would love if Craig wrote more often, because when someone stopped writing, that's when people started to forget him/her. There are a lot of blogs out there in cyberspace now, it's important to keep writing quality matierals to develop that readership. It's like real estate, we have to keep reminding our readers or clients, that we are here, come to us!

Cheers,

Cindy

Kimberly, I haven't been on in quite awhile, but when i do "tune in" yours is always one of the places I go.  i think I recognize most of you from your blogs and comments, though I'm sure you don't recognize me.  This is the perfect post for me, as was yours Yvonne-I've put of and put off blogging and have stuck to commenting.

I love the points about not worrying about original content, because it's all been commented on before-one of my rationalizations for not blogging-how many ways can the same thing be discussed????/But your remark on our individual take on the subjects make so much sense, as do all your well-written and thoughtful posts.  AND, I love number 10-you can always delete later(and hope it hasn't been caught in some cache somewhere to haunt us!)

I've joined RESA, and even The SDP is promoting blogging now-my thought has always been, "Do I really have to?"  It seems we must, despite my protestations of does the world need yet another blogger?

So, thanks so much for the encouraging words and well thought out guidelines, which I may be able to follow....BTW, Kimberly, I've been working on my version of the PPT presentation you so willingly shared ages ago.  It's nearly ready-techno savvy, what's that?  Have also been working on a PPT based marketing book to give to Realtors when we take the discs.  Again for me, a painstaking process, but something a little different than the packet of  of papers that usually gets dropped in offices, and I'm guessing the circular file.

think I'm off-topic a bit-just trying ti make up for many months absence.

So, thank you thank you.

PS   Love the photo!

Cindy - Thanks, I will leave myself a note to submit this when I return to my desk today.  My comment about frequency is a quantity vs. quality thing, really.  A lot of new bloggers start out just posting away without thinking of their blog as a whole. I know some bloggers that post a lot of stuff that is not worth reading, just to get the points or see their face on the blog list.  Setting your own pace - whatever it is - to ensure a quality blog is what's important.  And I wish Craig would post more often, too!

Joan - It is so good to see you again!  I do remember you - the lady with the pretty curly hair. :)

Don't think of it as adding more fodder to the blogosphere, think of it as communicating with the public about what it is you do.  I have had a few clients call because they read my blog and liked my approach to the industry.  I have one client that hired me because they read Craig's blog and when he reccommended me for the job, that sealed the deal. You never know who is reading or why, so just jump in - you never know where it will lead.

I'm glad you're back and look forward to reading what you have to say.  Congratulations on the plunge into high tech marketing!
