YOUR Attitude and mindset mean everything.  This is out of the ordinary for me to share a post like this, but I feel it is warranted.  If it helps just one person who reads it today, then the mission is accomplished!  One of my clients shared this with me today and I want to share it with you.....Our Attitude can really determine our Altitude in life and in business.

John is the kind of guy you love to hate.  He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say.  When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"  He was a natural motivator.  If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!  You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"  He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or ... you can choose to be in a bad mood I choose to be in a good mood."

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.  Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or... I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.  "Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.  "Yes, it is," he said. "Life is all about choices.  When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice.  You choose how you react to situations.  You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.  The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."  I reflected on what he said.  Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business.  We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.  Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.  I saw him about six months after the accident.  When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

"The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," he replied.  "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could choose to die. I chose to live."  "Weren't you scared?  Did you lose consciousness?"  I asked.  He continued, "the paramedics were great.  They kept telling me I was going to be fine.  But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.

In their eyes, I read "he's a dead man" I knew I needed to take action."  "What did you do?" I asked.  "Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied!'  The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, "Gravity."  Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live.  Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."  He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude... I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.  After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

What an uplifting post to read first thing in the morning.   Brad, this man is a gem.  His attitude not only affects him but those around him.  I have to believe that his shouting "gravity" before surgery reminded the doctors and nurses that he was a human being they were going to operate on and not another "patient".

Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful story with us.  Obviously, we as human beings make choices and choose our attitude.

Beautifully written Brad. If it's one thing I've learned well in my life is that the only person, place of thing I have control over is myself, my thinking, my attitude and behavior. That's it in a nutshell. You're getting up and I'm going to bed...or you're late getting to bed...:)

Brad:  Great message that always bears repeating.  Growing up, I was influenced primarily by negative people and so negativity has been an ongoing battle but I can say that if you take it day by day and start thinking positively, then it becomes easier and it really does make a "positive" difference.  I've learned that in real estate, staying positive is critical.  Here's the one I like from Corrie Ten Boon - Now just think about her situation.  If she could stay positive during what she went through then I for sure have no excuse to be negative.

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties tody of its strength.  Corrie Ten Boom

Oh, I've also learned that if I keepeth my mouth shut, I keepth out of trouble.

Proverbs 21:23  Whoso keepteh hism mouth and his tongue, keepeth his sould from troubles.

Brad, This is a beautiful story and I too knew a man much like John.  No matter WHAT was going on, he was happy every single day.  One day I stopped to ask him how he could be so happy ALL the time and he simply said "When I wake up in the morning and my feet hit the ground, I am going to have a wonderful day."  I think of his words every single morning!  Wonderful post.

Thank you!    If we can apply this to everything we do what a great world it would be!   We control our own reactions,  we just need to think first,  then react.    I am going to make every effort to implement.

Brad, I just popped a comment on Sally's latest post about the network, my comment being to the effect that my greatest benefit from belonging here is the ENCOURAGEMENT it gives me.  And then I stop by your blog!  This post is very encouraging to me.  Despite the deck being "stacked against you" it's still a choice - choose to live!  I appreciate the reference to Matthew 6 as well.  Jesus was telling us to lean on the Lord for the "rest of our life" and just worry about how we will react to our day today...

"If I were any better they would make it illegal."

My partner Susan asked me why I always told her my day was a 10 after several months of asking "how was your day on a scale of 1-10?"

I replied all my days are a 10, just some days my 10 is better than others.

Keep it positive and it follows and infects.

Thanks Brad, the reminder is appreciated.

Brad, --- NICE.   Looked at the local newspaper this morning and all it said was how the home market was getting worse and showed a sad realtor who couldn't get his clients home to sell.

My thought was too bad for him, but what can we do to change the perception of the public.  Time to get some positive energy going and turn the message around.  Today I'll do it one person at a time.

My wife and I are attending a wedding of a wonderful young couple today, nothing nicer than renewing vows and renewing ourselves.  It is indeed our choice to be happy.  Thanks for the scripture.  My favorite is Prov 3:5-6.  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on you own understanding, in every way acknowledge Him and He will direct your path."

How can we not have a great day???  Thanks

Kris - it is a great story, a friend of mine was having a bad day because of someone else's actions and attitude.  He sent me this email, and said it really lifted spirits and changed his Attitude!  I normally don't post or copy this kind of stuff, but with everything the way it is in the world right now, I felt compelled to copy this to a post!  I can see it was the post for many today based on all these comments.

I guess I could have a bad attitude in that I have 47 people to comment to, or I can have a good attitude for having so many great friends on Active Rain. I choose the good attitude and the friends!! :-)

Brad, oh so true as I like to say " The sun will come up tomorrow".  He's right as we do have choices and the better choice is to make it a good day.  Quite often, we come to this decision upon experiencing a difficult time in our lives.  As I have experienced such a time and would not change that experience for anything as I'm thankful for going through it. From now on, my view on life is oh so different and I realize that I plan on making it a good day for having been  thankful for my blessings. Thanks for your message of continued hope.

I LOVE this blog! I totally believe attitude is everything. My friends nicknamed me Sunshine because I always look for the good in things. I love having a positive affect on those around me. It makes all the difference in the world. I want to be happy and anything that comes my way that is a challenge becomes a good learning experience. Thanks for writing this. It's fantastic to be around those with a smile no matter what the situations may be.

Years ago I read a great book about two twins, I CAN and T'NACI. Everything was about attitude. If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can't, you can't. Who do we prefer to be around - those who challenge life, or those who feel they are victims?

Hi Brad - it's all about what we want and who we want to be, in my opinion.  It takes more effort to be down and negative than it does to smile and be positive.  I choose to be positive, even when it feels like the world is caving in on me.  It takes more facial muscles to frown than it does to smile.

Have you ever noticed the difference in the way people respond to you when you're smiling versus when you're not?  I did my own little experiment one time not all that long ago, and what a difference!  Even when I had only a soft slight smile on people responded right away with a smile back of their own.  When I had no smile on my face of any kind, I got very few smiles.  Elementary test for sure, but it proved what I was wondering about.

Share a smile with everyone - you just never know what that smile you give to someone else might just turn their world around for them.

Ann

All of us Thank you for this Positive Message :) :)

Kathy - you are too sweet!!  I copied this from an email I received from my client David at Prudential yesterday. I didn't realize till after I posted it that it was a story that has circulated in the past. I had never seen it before, and thought this was a friend of his. You were right! It did get featured, and then got pulled!  I regret that it is not an original story of my own, but do not regret that John is a real person and this really happened to him. I also did not post this to be "featured", but to be read by those who needed this kind of inspiration right now. I felt very strongly that someone else out there needed to read and hear this story too!  I'm glad I followed my instincts, it appears as though not just one, but many benefited by this post today!

I agree, gold star or not, the message is still the same and it needed to be told and shared today!  :-)

Jeff - also lean not unto your own understanding!  There are some really great scriptures that reflect how to manage our attitudes, but it really has to start from within our own spirit and heart!  If we worry more about others than ourselves, provisions will always be made for us!  I CHOOSE to do unto others and not have any expectations of what they'll do unto me.  It's taken me years to figure out that what you want in life, you must first give away! I have to believe that is true! It's my faith!  Thanks my friend for sharing and commenting! :-)

Vicki - there is always someone better off, and there is always someone worse off!  Give thanks for all we have and are blessed with!  In this story, John never saw the dark side of anything! We need to train our minds and hearts to be the same as his, even when we think our time is over or others see us as goners! I was truly touched and inspired by John's story, and couldn't resist sharing it with you! Please share this with someone who may need it right now in your area. I had no idea I'd get this many comments today, I wish I could get this to ALL who are in need of a good inspirational message right now! :-) That would be most people in our Industry!!  :-)

Thanks

Gary - what a great comment, had to paste it here so I don't have to scroll up and down to comment back!
I love your comment, "1 person at a time."  That's all we can do!  I hope your wedding went well, I'm sure it was beautiful.  Looking forward to your post all about it! :-)   Loved you Proverb quote too, just shared that earlier in a comment above, just couldn't remember where that was . Thanks!

Paula - the outcome of each day not only comes from our attitude, but how we let others attitudes affect us. I think this plays the biggest role in our attitudes, it's how we react and respond that determines if OUR attitude is the right one or not!  It's nice to post something like this and learn myself from it. The comments here are really giving me a great "ATTITUDE" because they ALL have a good attitude in return!

Lynn - You bring up a great point. If we didn't have bad times, we'd have nothing to compare the good times to. There wouldn't be as much contrast if the bad times weren't really bad, and the good times really good!  We don't appreciate the things in life as much as we should either.  We complain about standing in lines at the grocery store, but we don't even think twice about that when we're flat on our backs in the hospital.  No one likes traffic until you don't have a car! Man, I could go on forever....looks like another post coming on!!  LOL!  :-)

BTW - One of my favorite songs is "Here Comes The Sun" :-)

Brad,

I LOVE this blog! I totally believe attitude is everything. My friends nicknamed me Sunshine because I always look for the good in things. I love having a positive affect on those around me. It makes all the difference in the world. I want to be happy and anything that comes my way that is a challenge becomes a good learning experience. Thanks for writing this. It's fantastic to be around those with a smile no matter what the situations may be.

Anthea - nice to see you again! My oldest sons nickname is "Sunshine" because when he was born, nothing else in the world could phase me. Sean was and is the joy of my life! He could make the Sun Shine on the coldest and darkest dreary days. You sound like my son! Your comment is what he would say! I love how you said "It makes all the difference in the world."  I wish more people knew and could believe that right now! :-)

Ann

Hi Ann - finally getting to the bottom of the comments! Been here for a couple hours now! LOL! (BIG SMILE)
Love the test you did. My theory is the same as yours. I too, tried this test one evening up at the Safeway Store.  A few months ago, I had a really bad day and realized that the stress and pressure I was experiencing was all self inflicted. If I had dropped dead right then and there, it wouldn't have changed a thing. Life will go on with or without me, and the world could careless about my attitude at that moment in time.

People are killing themselves inside by allowing this to happen to them.  Every person I smiled at that night at Safeway, smiled right back as if to know, I was testing them and my theory.  They ALL passed, and I learned a valuable lesson.  Everything you think and feel is all YOUR choice.  It's so simple, but yet so powerful. Sorry for rambling but you really got me going with the whole "Smile vs Frown" thingy! LOL!  :-)

Brad, This is a truly amazing story! It is true that your attitude has so much to do with everything you do.  Just think what a happy world this would be if everybody was positive all the time.

Roberta - I know what you mean. The only thing is that for positive to exist, you have to have negative.  The difference is that we all have a choice.  Too many exercise the wrong choice and don't even realize that the choice is theirs.  Attitude Brings Gratitude! Latitude Brings Altitude!!  Ooh, I like that, I'll have to add the to my Bradisms list! LOL!! :-)

Carla -  we are the only ones that can make a difference and we have to do it one person at a time. If each of us carries this message to just 5 people in the course of a day either verbally or written, Imagine then what "One" person could do to make a difference! Jeff - thanks, well the conclusion here is that "It's All ABOUT CHOICE" and we all have that right and ability. We need to rethink our daily strategy when we wake up every morning.  Making the right choices all day long and having the right attitude is hard work, but we just need to keep that thought in the fore front of our minds!  :-)

Dan - life has a way of teaching us important lessons, and sometimes we can learn from others experiences too. The most important lesson in life is that we are in more control of ourselves and thoughts than anyone else.

We just have to remember that when situations and circumstances take over, we can't let them make us forget that the choices of how we feel or respond are entirely up to us!

I thank God for ANGELS like John.  Mine is named Janice.  What a blessing they are.

I know some people see me coming and say "Here comes that happy &$#@$ again" as I approach. I think to myself "Yep, here I is" :)

It was a hard lesson for me to come to this attitude and has served me well and literally kept me alive as well. The day I put "positivity" to action was the beginning of a new life for me. It took two years for me to understand (I think) how important it has been in my life. I still have my moments and then something wonderful is always revealed to me to put me back on track.

Thanks Mr Andersohn <said like Hugo Weaving in the "Matrix">  ;)

The point is, nobody really cares any more than you do! Brad, my motto is "feelings are a choice, choose wisely."

Many times people fail to realize they have control over their attitude so it's up to you how you feel.

LaShon - that is so true.  We have to stop and think about how we want to feel in response to a situation or a circumstance.  It's the things we have no control over that we shouldn't let affect our attitudes.  Even the thing we can control, we have the choice, and yes, we must choose wisely!  Great comment, thanks!!  :-)

What an excellent post!  Attitude is everything and we have a choice in the attitude that we have.  We can blame no one but ourselves for the places that our attitudes take us.

Kevin - said like a true pro and a good MAN!  We can only blame ourselves for letting anything in life control our attitudes.  Take no prisoners, do like the song says..."Don't Worry, Be Happy!"  Right?  :-)

Brad,

My attitude is fine today, partly now, because of you. Thanks.

Maybe we could find a way to pass all this joy on to the folks in Omaha that have just met with tragedy.

There must be days that some find it hard to smile. We can't forget them.

What a great post Brad.  I try to have that attitude everyday.  Somedays are harder than others.  You know they say it is hard to stay mad if you smile.  I choose to smile.  May John continue to be healed physically.  His mind says he already is.

Sharon  - thanks, you're right, you can't stay angry if you smile or laugh.  It's all about mindset and attitude.
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on this post, and most of all, for having a WINNING attitude while you dud it!  :-)

Ernie - I love this one, it's the only post I ever did that got the "RED X" but the message here is probably one of the best I've delivered.  Just the messenger, but what an impact this had on me and others. Always great to see you my friend, thanks for returning. :-)

Awww Margaret, thanks for digging around in my closet and finding this one, I just read it again myself and it was a good "check" for me and my attitude today.  It is a great day because that is what my attitude and I have chosen it will be.  Happy New Year Margaret.  :-)
