I started composting this year. You might be surprised to know how much everyday stuff can be composted, including a lot of the waste normally dumped down the kitchen sink. A very helpful article was emailed to me, so I thought I would share some of the mentioned tips:

BROWN PLUS GREEN EQUALS BLACK GOLD!
The best compost "recipe" includes a combination of carbon-rich brown materials (dry leaves, plant stalks, pine needles, small twigs, wood shavings, shredded newspaper) and nitrogen-rich green materials (fresh leaves, lawn clippings, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags). Carbon is the spark that starts the composting process. Nitrogen fuels the microorganisms that decompose materials. Try to add about three times as many brown materials as green materials. Do not compost meat, bones, animal waste, dairy products, diseased plants, seeded weeds, plants treated with herbicides or pesticides, or any inorganic material. Keep adding kitchen scraps during the winter months. They'll decompose when the weather warms.

Kristin.....this sounds off, but this is one of the most valuable posts I've read from you....for me. I can't buy homes in your backyard, but this is huge. Growing my garden this year and this is an essential part. Thank!
Great words of wisdom, Kristin. We compost a small bit of our organic waste. The city does however, take all food scraps including meat and fish. Our actual waste that goes to a land fill is down to a very small container.
Composts are wonderful, and the difference it makes in your garden is outstanding!
When I had a garden, I used to compost everything needed to create a rich mix for the soil. It's so easy and it's better than ending up in a landfill somewhere.
doing it for years, huge difference in my garden. The neighbors are getting on board now, the ones with a serious garden that is.
Hey Kristin, Good information, I never knew that so much could be use in compost. Have a good one.
Kris, you are the queen of awesome information!
Have a huge garden and the composting route is the only way to go. Win win.
Thanks Larry..I know what you mean :-)
Glenn, that is awesome!!
Laura, guess I need a garden now!
Craig, you got that right!
Scott, you taught your neighbors well!
Now you do Will! :-)
Tony, thanks buddy!
Andrew, I agree!!!
Good afternoon, Kristin. I have a mulch pile in the back of the yard. Yes, green does make black gold. So good for the plants and the environment...
I agree Mike...and, I knew you would be a composter :-)
Well Miss Kristin, I just happen to have some land I might be willing to rent. LOL!
Kristin
Being a past Wisconsin farmer I can tell you composting is the way to go buddy
Laura, good one ! :-)
Tom, you sure do!
Growing up we had two huge compost piles. We never had to buy good dirt. The results were that my parents were included in our town's garden tour because our flowers were so amazing.
You were composting before composting was "cool" right Steve and Jan ? :-)
