From the SEO Experts...Getting an SEO BS (not bachelors of science)
I am often asked how to accomplish different tasks within the SEO/Social Media Marketing world, and often the amount of information out there comes up. Just spend five minutes on Twitter and you will see hundreds of SEO/SMM related tweets, some worth the time it takes to click and explore, and then there are others that are just spam. People often ask how long I have been involved in SEO/SMM and how I learned what I know. I have been working on my SEO/SMM for well over a year, and I have delved deeply into the medium if you will for about 7 months. I know alot of people across the country and the world for that matter that I converse and exchange SEO/SMM ideas with on a regular basis. There are those that know a lot more than me, and there are those that know a lot less then myself.
A friend who is knowledgeable in the SEO/SMM arena recently made a statement that I absolutely loved, while discussing all the SEO/SMM "experts" out there, he made the statement, " how can someone call themselves an expert on SEO/SMM when it still so new". That made me really think, I mean how can anyone be an expert on something in less than say 20 years or so. You can be seriously informed and involved, but still not have the time "in" to be an expert.
One of the virtues of the SEO/SMM community is that most of those that are knowledgeable...share. Recently at a two day Raincamp conference I had a blast spending hours talking and exchanging ideas with SEO/SMM "experts" from all over the county. My brain was exhausted from all the stimulating conversations. No one there considered themselves an SEO/SMM expert, and any one that would have I believe would have immediately lost credibility within the group. SEO/SMM techniques change like the winds, what was once a solid technique, can now be modified to adapt to technology advances. And that includes the mantra "content is king" More on that in later blogs.
In any event, be sure that when you are asking advice from someone regarding SEO/SMM that consider the source. If the person holds everything close to heart, and is stingy with information I would be suspicious. Like they are an expert and the information is not available from numerous other sources. For that matter, join Activerain and join the "blogging & SEO" group, and before you know it, you will an SEO/SMM expert......
I would love it if I could find someone to just do this for me that I could trust. I know exactly what you mean about reading/hearing SEO experts offer to do things instantly...ugh.
Hi Gerry,
No doubt it takes a lot of effort. I'm getting pretty good, but as you said, it changes so you need to keep updated.
Also, you should be able to google the keywords to see if they come up on page 1. If they claim to be a SEO guru and you can't find them on page 1, they're not as good as they think.
Karen, if it were only that easy LOL
Paul, I know what you mean, google Gettysburg Gerry...takes about 4 -5 pages before my stuff stops....I earned that
There is so much to learn. I am going to the Dallas RainCamp this month and cannot wait.
Wait... You mean I'm not gonna get to 'expert' status for another 19 years and 10 months?
Man Gerry.... just when I think I know something it changes.
What I do know is that AR has major Google juice. In experiments, I have posted to my Wordpress blog the same article as on AR. My AR post is on page one and I cannot find my Wordpresss post. The power of a couple hundred thousand people HELPS!!!
I love SEO but admit SEO hurts my blonde head and I will be headed to Dallas later this month for more SEO tips whoo hoo
