Our Everglades. Your Everglades, There's No Other Place Like It on Earth!

A little more than hundred years ago a few brave white men attempted to settle South Florida.  The Indians had been thriving here a few centuries.  Two trains of thought made one culture succeed and the other fail miserably during the early days of development.  As it is with most ventures, perseverance eventually won out, but by the same token, at what cost.  This won't be a history lesson, you can Google everything you need to know about the who, what, when & wheres of how Florida grew to become this fantastic destination.  Millions have visited and others now call Florida home with 2nd, 3rd and often more homes scattered around the country.  Few ever get out and see what those original pioneers were up against when trying to make this a more habitable place.  I am going to provide a favorite choice of mine which will allow you to view and experience a tiny portion of their many impediments.

The best way to see this is by Airboat.  And the #1 recommended Everglades airbout tour company I've found is Capt. Doug's.  What makes them unique is the size of their boat.  Imagine, going smaller, almost unheard of in our society.  Well, this single feature makes a World of difference when taking in the sights Our Everglades has to show you.  Not unlike, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone Park, Yosemite or even Denali plus many others this is a completely unique environment which with proper management will continue to be an unspoiled retreat for generations to visit and enjoy forever.

No mention of the Everglades is ever complete without a great shot of the American Alligator!

Hi Kevin:

I am a Florida native transplanted up in Charlotte, NC.  I used to live just a few miles from Everglades National Park.  You're right there is no place like it.  It is a must see for anyone who visits the area and it is a great break from the beach scene which is what everyone thinks Florida is.

Jennifer, there's nothing better than the sun rising in the Everglades and life surrounding your every move.  Thanks for supporting this post with your experience there!

Tagrid, I'm just happy that you stopped by to comment today.  I will notify the proper authorities if I believe you're wandering too close to the edge of un-civilization.

Ginny, call me first, I'll remind you.  There are some tours that just don't do the park or the patrons justice.

Alexandra, it's dusk and dawn when those pesky mosquitos are most active but then also is the wildlife you're trying to see.  Seigel Safari Nets are de rigueur in the glades.

Kevin,

I am relieved, that those pesky creatures stay away during prime time.  I spent some time in Minnesota, and they were known as the state bird, LOL. A

I understand that a number of everglade plants are on the brink of extinction.  Seeing them in their natural environment before they are all gone would be nice but, isn't this alligator country?

Tagrid, it's not funny!  I don't want to find out you're putting Chanel #5 into Big Cypress Swamp, okay.

Alexandra, I have heard about their swarms there too.  It can happen here sometimes also.  On occasion I've had to pull a Humphrey Bogart, African Queen type maneuver.

Renee, nah, you're not ready for a bucket-list just yet but we can easily accommodate conquering both of those fears here.

Dee, alligators range from Texas to North Carolina and all points South.  I'm more concerned about the non-indigenous snake population, especially pythons.  We still have plenty of plants that exist no where else on Earth but with humans encroaching and with that virtually stopping the waterflow as it once existed we will continue to lose that war.
