Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

By
Industry Observer

Do we all perceive beauty the same way? Do we want to?

When I first got serious about photography, I photographed typical things: babies, kids, home decor, pretty flowers.

Then, I got bored and started looking longer and harder for items that might be interesting to photograph. My family chides me for "stalking" things, sometimes things they can't even see, or don't realize are there, or that they think are "ugly".

But, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.

Did you know there is a flickr group devoted to fire hydrants? And dozens just for pictures of rusty stuff?

Well, I didn't, but now I do, so I joined them and have discovered a whole new world of beauty, documented all over the world by professional and amateur photographers alike.

This is a great photo, it is something I look for when I want to create new paintings.  So much character and the colors, yes.

Babies, kids, home decor, flowers, and fire hydrants. Yeah, that makes sense. Seriously, I've been into photography for about two years now and find unusual objects interesting to photograph.

Alison, I saw Sondra Meyer's post about your post and photograph.  Welcome to ActiveRain.  I look forward to seeing more of your interesting photos.  I love this one - very unique -- and I can't imagine that many of us would have ever thought to take a photo of this old fire hydrant.  Thanks for sharing it!

Alison, what a superb photo. An image many would easily pass by and think perhaps there is no beauty there. But upon close inspection amazing things going on with the rust and the color. Welcome to our world of photography and writing and sharing.

Alison - First and foremost, I love your eye for beauty!  Ever since I first saw it on Orlando's blog, I have enjoyed your funky photos.  Secondly, while I don't do FB (that's a whole other post), you don't really have to go far to join photography groups.  We have several right here on AR.  Check out Vegas Bob; I believe he moderates most of the photo groups.

Alison, WOWEEEEEE. From another passionate photographer, I completely get your interesting perspective. It's so much fun to twist/tweak and generally show something common in an uncommon light....figuratively and literally!

Good job, missy!

Thank you all so much for stopping by to check this photo out.  I'm am thrilled to see the quality and variety of the photos on Active Rain!

Roy - beautiful flower!  Such amazing detail!

Donne - ironically, the first few hydrant shots Orlando brought home I tossed because I thought he had missed the focus (hydrant in the distance) - but then those pix kinda started a thing - even the kids hunt for rust, particularly with such glorious paint colors to go with! He takes more of the whole hydrant - not game for getting down in the dirt for the close-ups!  :-)
