Canada Has a New Government!

image of canadian flagCanadians have voted into power a new majority government. The Conservative Party is the winner! No more federal elections for four and one half years except for by-elections--October 2015 will be the next federal election.

There are 308 seats in the Canadian Parlament. At the point of writing this post, the Conservative Party is leading in or has won 166 of those seats, a clear majority. The New Democrat Party (NDP) is leading or has won 103 seats. For the first time in Canadian history the NDP Party will form the official opposition. The Liberal Party is leading in or has won 34 seats.

The Bloc Quebecois (a party which has candidates only in the province of Quebec) is leading in or has won 4 seats. And the big surprise is that the Green Party is leading in or has won 1 seat. If the trend holds until all ballots are counted, this will be the first Green Party seat to be taken in North American politics.

Canada has had a minority government for the past five years, since 2006. Hopefully, the new government can get on with what is so important for a government to do--govern the country!

Ted,

Four elections in seven years was just too much. It's good to see that the Bloc has gone.

Hi Ted,

I love the peaceful transition of power.  Sounds like there could be big changes ahead.  Best wishes for the future!

Ted,

Maybe my elected officials in America should pay attention to what's happening in your world. We could certainly use some GOOD change! Sounds like your country is doing well for the people. It will be interesting to see how things develop. I wish you and the people all the best!

Ted, I don't follow Canadian politics as much as I could, but I'm confused - how can there be a "minority" government.  Wouldn't one party have the majority?  Please explain.

I’ve never quite understood Canadian (or British) elections with their irregularity. Heck, I’m not quite sure I understand our elections!

I have to echo the other comments. Is there no standard time to have a federal election? Why is the next one in 4½ years?
