SWCD Prepares for Capital Improvements...REALLY!! By Destroying Mature Royal Palm Trees!

Saturday we received a four page document in the mail from Sunshine Water Central District. "This program will begin May 1, 2011. In fairness to those property owners who may not have been aware of, or inherited, obstructions placed on SWCD property, the District has established a grace period of (3) months to allow property owners ample time to remove items without formal action being taken by the District. Within the next month, surveyors for SWCD will be staking the corners of your property, which will show you the SWCD right-of-way line."

Palm Tree Lined Property

May 1st has promised the surveyors for SWCD staked our property and their line is one foot behind our tree line.

Now for the "History and Importance of the SWCD was established in 1963 as a special taxing district, designed to protect the central area of Coral Springs from Flooding during and after severe storm events. Flooding is a real concern for the SWCD because we live at such low elevations and have frequent hurricane exposure. The District owns and operates 22 miles of interconnected canals with two pumping stations. SWCD employees maintain the canals on a daily basis by removing debris and operating the District's Pumpstations in order to discharge excess water into the C14 Canal."

On a daily basis? We have not seen anyone for years maintaining this waterway.

We have been through many storms and a few hurricanes in the last 20 years. We have never been flooded nor have we lost any of our 50 some palm trees lining our entire property. Coral Springs lost over 60% of trees throughout the city during Wilma but this property lost none. I believe the reason is that Royal Palm Trees are Native to Florida, their roots are deep.

All the palm trees that line our property have been nurtured from blades of grass. We take great pride in our property and the park like setting it has developed into. I do not believe that these Royal Palm Trees in any way interfere with the SWCD daily, pre or post storm activities. What is the advantage of destroying and defacing property that has been here for 20 years. If SWCD has been working these canals on a daily basis, as they state, why have they not said anything before these Royal Palm Trees grew to 30 feet or more. The SWCD needs to take a second look at our property and remove the stakes.

What a shame to destroy these trees, they're beautiful, I have palm trees that I have raised and would be devastated to lose, I hope it works out for you

Good Morning Brian - I have been in contact by my email and phone with one of decision makers. He was pleasant on the phone and said they were going to take this case by case and followed up with a email. They have a person taking pictures on the lines and residence yards. There is also a city meeting on Wednesday which I will be attending with many of my neighbors. Wish us well:)

Yes, this doesn't sound quite right.  The trees are beautiful and that certianly would affect property values.

Hello Patricia, thanks for stopping by. I have been away for a few days to my daughters graduation in Philly. The situation with the SWCD is going to be on going. We did attend the town meeting, but only three canal/home owners showed up, not much of a presents. We did speak with the new committee but ready did not get any good news. We are not giving up, will keep you posted.

That is sad and there has to be other options that they can take rather than destroying what took nature so long to grow.

I'm not sure why they want to remove those trees, but I sure hope you can find a way to work things out and save your royal palms, they are beautiful!  I didn't know they were native to Florida!

Todd- Thanks, it is sad but we haven't given up yet. We went to the town meeting and will be following up at the next meeting in two weeks. There is a committee of three people that votes what stays and what goes. I will keep you posted.

Georgina - Sometimes things just don't make sense. I took a walk around the neighborhood the other day and took alot of pictures. There is no need to destroy the trees, they have plenty of access to the canal from many points. Thanks for stopping by:)
